Item Description: Erie, Pennsylvania: Hammermill Papers Group, 1974. This Sketchbook of Maurice Prendergast was Printed in a Limited Edition, of Which This is Copy Number 1879., 1974. Octavo, illus. boards & black cloth (hardcover), unpaginated. Fine (As New) in a Very Good+ dust jacket with light edgewear and rubbed spine. From Foreword: This beautiful little sketch book tells us something special about the artist Maruice Prendergast, and the creative spirit which he quietly contributed to the modern movement in American art.At a time when Cezanne was unkown in this country, as late as 1905 (a year before Cezanne died), Prendergast was prodding his contemporaries to "know Cezanne." Prendergast was joined in the independent movement that put on The Eight exhibition in 2908, the first public revelation of the vigor of modern American painting. He participated in the Independent Show of 1910 that was the precursor of the great 1913 Armory Show which brought the Post-Impressionists and Modernists to this country. How difficult it is for us to realize that in those dark ages there were no instantaneous pubilcations with color reproductions ot provide knowledge of the current exhibitions. Now modern technical skills in printing make it possible for this sketchbook to be reproduced very faithfully so its creative spirit can be shared with a larger audience. The work of art is a catalyst, having fresh meaning fore very generation. Here are these lovely pages, like bouquets of wild flowers -- culled long ago in the parks and seasides of New England. This sketchbook was started sixty years ago, right after the Armory Show. It shows that Prendergast continued to grow as an artist, in his own way. Some of the concepts were carried out in the studio on a larger scale, using water color and pastel. Others become ideas that were woven into elaborate compsitions carried out in oil on canvas, like handsome tapestries. Yet each page in pencil or water color has a monumental character that transcends the limitations of scale. We feel in the presence of the artist, as though we had the privilege of standing at his side -- while he pauses to remark about something in nature -- a gesture or a cluster of forms -- a sequence of color notes.
