Item Description: Theodore Presser Co., 1936. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Around the Maypole: A May Day Festival with Maypole Dance Tunes for Piano and Complete Instructions for Dancing by William Baines was published by Theodore Presser Co., Philadelphia, in 1936. This 6 3/4" X 10 1/4", 27-page, 77-year-old offering is an ex-library copy in G condition. There are a few of the standard library markings in evidence, and some mild shelf wear is seen, primarily at the four outer tips of the front/back cover boards. There is yellowing/browning of the text's pages, and due to some insecurity (but not really any actual separation to speak of) along the central binding, mostly near top, and bottom, of same, clear taping was called for in 8-10 random spots. From pages 4-5, "It is thought Maypole dancing had its origin among the ancient Britons and began as a religious rite, held on the first day of May. Children of those times carried leaves and flowers in procession and marched through the village streets chanting to the Roman Goddess Flora, an image being borne in their midst beautifully adorned and held aloft. The elders also took part and danced and sang around sacred shrines, this to drive away all evil spirits, such as ghosts, devils, disease, and famine. . As time went on, these religious rites gave place to merrymaking and we learn of Maypole dancing being much in evidence at the time of Robin Hood. In Queen Elizabeth I's reign, Maypole dancing seemed to have reached its zenith, and we read of it being performed at Kenilworth Castle in honor of her visit." Indeed, everything you ever sought to learn about Maypole dancing may be found in this unassuming, slender volume. Once past the history of Maypole dancing, and the detailed instructions for each of the eight dances offered, this is really a songbook, first and foremost. The eight dances presented include The Grand Chain, The Spider Web, The Candy Stick, The Braid, The Water Wheel, The Crisscross, Half Weave Nos. 1 and 2, and The Serpentine and Exit. Just some of the eight songs to dance to, scored for piano, include "Come, Lasses and Lads", "Country Gardens", "May Bells Ringing", "Harvesters' Dance", "Prestwick Chimes", and "Bluff King Hal". This is an odd little volume, dealing with an ancient, celebratory rite of Spring that, outside the confines of a Renaissance Fair, perhaps, would be as rare an occurrence as a politician admitting blame. For anything. Ever. Thank you very much!!. Bookseller Inventory # 006103
