Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine (see description). Photo Cover (illustrator). First Edition. -----------hardcover, about 12 x 9.25 inches, a Very Good+ copy, faint small dampstain and a bit of rippling to some pages, really quite faint, in a lightly rubbed near Fine price clipped dustjacket, one corner is ever so slightly bumped, this copy has been signed and inscribed on page 123 by Duncan hawkins a past president of The Antique and Classic Boat Society of Toronto, he has signed in the chapter where he is mentioned in relation to The WHISPER which was a boat used during the STELCO Strike in the 1940', 155 pages, colour and b&w photos throughout, a lovely book, ---"From the Author: Although sixty-five years have passed since the last Ditchburn boat left the Gravenhurst factory, their products continue to set the standard for the glory years of wooden pleasure-craft construction. Survivors are treasured reminders of a time when craftsmen built boats by hand, using the finest materials, creating a custom product uniquely suited to its purpose and its owner. Herbert Ditchburn was born in Muskoka in 1880 and it is a reflection of the quality of his life and his contribution to pleasure boating in Canada that this volume has been undertaken. Today, as we try to make sense of a world that is changing dramatically, these wonderful reminders of the past have assumed a new importance -- reminding us of the impact of beauty, function, design, integrity, and craftsmanship on our daily lives. Synthetic materials, mass production, and standardized design largely replaced traditional wooden-boat construction after the Second World War, but the desire to maintain the beloved products of the Ditchburn Boat Co. is increasing each year. Owning a vintage wooden boat has become a status symbol as well as a pleasure, and is now also a responsibility. The importance of preserving the remaining examples of Ditchburn production is clearly demonstrated by the zeal and dedication of Ditchburn owners. Fully aware of their special status, they have devoted time, money, and skill to maintaining these important vessels, and they have been generous in sharing their good fortune by cooperating to the fullest extent in the production of this volume. Through their efforts, we may share the glory of Ditchburn excellence for many years to come. The photographer, Bev McMullen, and I hope that this volume will serve to ensure that the memory of this company, the quality of its products, the talent and artistry of its craftsmen will remain forever with Canadians as a benchmark of just how good we can be. Item Description: Cambridge: University Press, 1942 [1958]., 1958. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition, third printing. Frontispiece, xiv, 224 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket (unclipped). Reprints 21 papers, three letters and three briefer contributions. 'In [1899] he joined Arthur Guinness and Sons, the brewers, in Dublin. Perceiving the need for more accurate statistical analysis of a variety of processes, from barley production to yeast fermentation, he urged the firm to seek mathematical advice. In 1906 he was therefore sent to work under Karl Pearson at University College, London. In the next few years Gossett (sic) made his most notable contributions to statistical theory, publishing under the pseudonym 'Student.' . . . All of Gossett's work was prompted by practical problems arising at the brewery. The most famous example is his 1908 paper, 'The Probable Error of a Mean [pp. 11-34 in Collected Papers].' He had to estimate the mean value of some characteristic in a population on the basis of very small samples. The theory for large samples had been worked out from the time of Gauss a century earlier, but when in practice large samples could not be obtained economically, there was no accurate theory of estimation. . . . What came to be called Student's t-test . . . In the theory of testing later advanced by Jerzy Neyman and Egon S. Pearson, Student's t-test is shown to be optimum. In the competing theory of fiducial probability advanced by R. A. Fisher, t is equally central. Gossett was perhaps lucky that he hit on the statistic which has proved basic for the statistical analysis of the normal distribution. His real insight lies in his observation that the sampling distribution of such statistics is fundamental for inference. In particular, it paved the way for the analysis of variance, which was to occupy such an important place in the next generation of statistical workers' (Ian Hacking in D.S.B. V: 476-7). Copy of Geoffrey S. Watson, with his signature. 'Professor Watson's work in probability and statistics was interdisciplinary; he once wrote that the subject 'led me into all sorts of interesting corners of science and the world.' As part of one project, which served as the basis for many public lectures, he traveled to Antarctica with biologists to develop a method for estimating the size of the penguin population. His two papers analyzing the consequences of the repeal of the motorcycle helmet law, written while he was a consultant to the Highway Safety Institute in the early '80s, provoked newspaper editorials and threatening phone calls from bikers. His EPA work evidently caused his name to appear on a Reagan 'hit list,' which described him as a 'smooth but extreme environmentalist' ' ('Professor of Statistics, Emeritus, Geoffrey S. Watson Dies at 76'; Princeton University Office of Communications obituary). Bookseller Inventory # 23742
