Item Description: W.W. Norton & Company, 1977. Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. A Norton Critical Edition Very Good Trade Paperback. Wraps with grey border black panel with photograph: A Polk Street corner in the late 1890s. Clean, bright, tight and solid binding, lower corner curl with rubbing, light edge-wear, penciled notations and underlines in literary criticism section. Backgrounds and Sources section documents the origin of the novel as a San Francisco murder, in Norris' borrowings from Zola, and in his use of contemporary scientific beliefs. This text in the Norton Critical Edition is that of the first edition of 1899, an edition which had as printer's copy Norris' handwritten manuscript and which was published by Doubleday & McClure. The text contains a number of passages removed by Norris from later printings in response to the unfavorable commentary of several reviewers. Text is thoroughly annotated to reveal the extent and accuracy of Norris' use of his California setting. The Criticism section offers examples of early criticism and more recent studies. Critics: Frank Norris, William Dean Howells, Ernest Marchand, Maxwell Geismar, Charles C. Walcutt, Richard Chase, William B. Dillingham, Donald Pizer, and Joseph H. Gardner. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1977 Second Printing. 5in x 8.25in tall; xv, 380pp. with Selected Bibliography. Bookseller Inventory # 55220

Item Description: Boni & Liveright, New York, 1920. Wrappers. Book Condition: Very Good+. No Jacket. Brodzky (illustrator). SCARCE Modern Library early edition in flexible faux leather. Brown with Boni & Liveright /ML logo (style #2) on cover in gold. Exterior is remarkably well preserved with only light rubbing wear at spine and lower edge. Interior is nice and tight and unmarked. Small stain on illustrated Brodzky endpapers. Back hinge is just beginning to loosen. 1917 was the first year of Mod Lib series. B&L was their publisher from 1917 to 1925, by which time there were well over 100 titles. I believe this HTF title is from 1920 based on the binding design, but there is no date printed other than the 1899 original release. Bookseller Inventory # 000465
