Observationum et curationum medicinalium libri duo: XXIV.: VAN FOREEST, Pieter

Item Description: Ex Officina Plantiniana, Leyde, 1596. *-------* First edition. Pieter van Foreest was a pupil and colleague of Vesalius. Because of his thoughtful therapeutic approach to patient care, Pieter van Foreest is often considered the Dutch Hippocrates. He began publishing his Observationes et curationes in 1588, usually issuing three or four books at a time. Ultimately his books became a comprehensive series on disease, which ultimately included more than thirty-two volumes. The series reflected an extensive summary of sixteenth century medical knowledge, and was frequently cited by later authors. Very fine contemporary binding. In-8. Collation : (32), 521, (15) pp. Vélin rigide, plats très ornés. (Reliure de l'époque.). Bookseller Inventory # 13905

Item Description: Frankfurt; Christian Egenolff, 1553. 8:o. 16x10 cm. (8), 146, (5) leaves (the last blank is missing). 18th century marbled wrappers. With 69 woodcuts in the text, some of them by Johann Faber von Kreuznach and by Hans Sebald Beham, depicting for instance medicinal plants, a hospital interior, the treading of grapes, a vomiting man, and a pig slaughter. Spine faded and with two L-shaped tears. The woodcut printer's mark on the title-leaf has been cut away. On the opposite page only the catchword is affected by this operation. A short tear in top margin of leaf 104, and in outer margin of leaf 128. A stain in lower margin of leaf 138. A few small specks and fingerprints scattered through the text, but contents are remarkably clean. In lower margin of leaf 13 (verso) and 58 (recto) a reasonably early owner has written a few short verses in latin, for instance: "Post coenam stabis, vel passus mille meabis" [After the meal, you should rise and walk at least one thousand steps], and "Caseus, anguilla nimis obsunt si comedantur" [Cheese and Eel becomes too heavy if they are eaten together]. This work on maintaining good health is traditionally attributed to the Catalan alchemist, astrologer and physician Arnald of Villanova (1235-1311), here edited by Jacob Crell and Joannes Curio. The first edition thus was published in 1545. "Of the knowledge emanating from [the Medical School at] Salerno, however, the work most influental on health practices of Europeans was of quite different character. A health manual, the so-called Regimen sanitatis, consisted of dietetic and pharmaceutical rules in verse form. The original collection of 364 verses presumably was edited and annotated about the year 1300, by one of the most progressive and chemically oriented physicians of the late Middle Ages, Arnald of Villanova. Although perhaps not intended originally for laymen, the treatise soon became popular, and after the invention of printing it appeared in all European languages in upward of 300 editions, accumulating additional verses and commentaries through the decades. The relatively simple and inexpensive pharmaceutical measures advocated in its pages probably was not the least appealing feature of this popular health guide for a continent." (Kremers and Urdang, History of Pharmacy pp. 32). Bookseller Inventory # 20918

Item Description: Tiguri Zürich excudebat Christoph. Frosch, 1577. Two parts in one volume, small 4to, ff. [viii], 140; 28; with printer's device on titles and three full-page woodcut illustrations in the second part; both title-pages strengthened (with paper patches, where stamps possibly removed, on versos); early binding with vellum spine (lettered in ink) and sides made from old musical MS. First edition. The first part of this work consists of a large number of letters from Gesner (and, on a few occasions, to him) to various eminent botanists, physicians, scientists and scholars of his time throughout Europe. Amongst those with whom Gesner corresponded were Johann Crato von Krafftheim, Achilles Pirminus Gasser (editor of Peregrinus's De Magnete, with whom he discussed the magnet), Adolf Occo (to whom he wrote in both Greek and Latin), Felix Platter, Theodor Zwinger and Leonhard Fuchs. 'These 226 letters on a wide variety of medical topics, edited by Caspar Wolf, Gesner's literary executor, and published posthumously, indicate the wide interests and scientific insights of this great Renaissance scholar. The book contains two botanical tracts and three fine woodcuts of plants from Gesner's huge collection of drawings and woodcuts of plants which were to form the illustrative portion of his projected history of plants' (Heirs of Hippocrates). These illustrations, of which Gesner had drawn and collected some 1500, were prepared for a proposed monumental treatise, an Opera Botanica, which he never finished. He entrusted Caspar Wolf with the project, but Wolf was not able to fulfil his commission. He sold the material, including some blocks already cut, to Johann Camerarius the younger and these later came into the hands of C.J. Trew. Some of them were published by Schmiedel in the 18th century, but the printing here of the three blocks is remarkable in being near-contemporary. These cuts appear in the second part of the work, which has a separate title page. It is a monograph (taken from the proposed Opera Botanica) on aconites and hellebore - indeed, it is the first monograph on these plants. Provenance. Nicholas Franchimont a Frankenfeld, with his ownership inscription and monogram on first title, and his underlinings and marginal MS annotations. Franchimont a Frankenfeld (1611-84) was professor of medicine at Prague. Amongst other medical topics, he wrote on lithotomy. Adams G526; Bird 1062; Durling 2067; Heirs of Hippocrates 186; Hunt 129; Parkinson & Lumb 1004; Waller 3521; Wellcome I 2805; Wellisch 3.1. Bookseller Inventory # 9233
