Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Pip Williams, a retired pharmacist living in Northland, has spent his life observing and recording the use by local Maori of native plants for medicinal purposes. Te Rongoa Maori brings together his observations on 43 New Zealand plants and the health problems they were used to treat, colourfully interspersed with anecdotal evidence and beautifully illustrated with watercolours and engravings. Much of the information in Te Rongoa Maori was told to the author by Ngapuhi kuia and kaumatua over 40 years ago. Maori in earlier times knew abou the therapeutic benefits derived from trees and plants for a variety of health problems, but had no knowledge of pharmacology. Consequently, Te Rongoa Maori makes no claims to being a manual of Maori medicine. However, it comprises an important and faithful record of information gleaned over a lifetime's close association with the Ngapuhi people, and of the cultureal importance of this heritage. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

From the mid-1930s he was a pharmacist in Far North of NZ, an area with a large Maori population. During the hard times of the Depression traditional Maori remedies were frequently used and the author became familiar with these, thus extending his knowledge of treatments, both pharmacuetical and Maori traditional. His association with practical modern medicine continued for many years and he was years chairman of the Northland Hospital Board fo 24 years and for 10 years was a member of the NZ Hospital Boards Association. The foreword to Pip William's book says he "makes no recommendations but indicates which plants were used for various problems, colourfully interspersing his notes with anecdotal evidence." More than 40 plants are listed in this study, 24 of them illustrated with dainty and exquisite colour paintings, arists including E Blumhardt and Fanny Osborne with etchings by S Parkinson. First printed by Reed in 1996, reprinted in 2004 and twice in 2005 with this reprint in 2006, 79 pages, colour art illustrations throughout, on left hand pages. Book
Soft Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Paintings, Various Artists (illustrator). Reprint. First published by Reed in 1996 and reprinted in 2004 and 2005, a new edition was produced in 2006 with reprints that year and the following year. In 2008 the Pengiinh Group's Raupo Books took over publication, with this copy from that first Raupo printing. The author has an interesting background. Arriving in Kaikohe (in the Far North) as a pharmacist he "passed into a new world as far as medicine was concerned." He found that customers made their own "concoctions" and were under the influence of the tohunga (native priest) as there was only one doctor in the district who visited once a week. Williams was to become the "doctor, vet, social worker and friend to the local residents, although it was some time before "they had enough faith in me to tell what (plants) they were using." Williams was 93 when the book was first published and his service to the Far North community extended through the Depression years, the Second World War and for many years after. His public service included 24 years as Northland Hospital Board chairman and 10 years as a member of the NZ Hospital Boards' Association. Williams says that most of the information in the book was passed on by kuia (older Maori women) and from his own observations, adding that "I have just recorded what older Maori taught me . but I take no responsibility for their efficiency." The book first appeared at a time when there was a renewed interest in traditional Maori remedies and the plants used preparing them and the frequency of reprints shows that it had reached many interested in the topic. The book covers more that 40 different plant species, describing their habitat and medicinal uses. Iillustrated with 23,small colour paintings, the majority by Fanny Osbourne, complemented by other artists. Reprint of 2008 from Raupo Books, 79 pages, Green soft covers are VG+ with colour painting to front, internally excellent, no inscriptions.
