Item Description: Munich: Franz Eher, 1925-27, 1925. Octavo. Original white cloth and red boards (volume I) and original red cloth (volume II), spines and front covers lettered in red and white. Preserved in a custom made red morocco slipcase and chemise. Corners of volume two a little bruised. Cover of volume two with an ink mark. Paper stock lightly toned, gathering 21 in volume one bound in twice; a very good copy. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Hitler to volume one. Ownership inscription of Emil Garraux dated August 1925 to front free endpaper of volume one, with his very occasional pencil side ruling and marginal notes in the text and to the rear endpapers. First edition, published in an edition of 10,000 copies on 18 July 1925. The importance of Mein Kampf cannot be understated. Not only was it the origin and strength of the National-Socialist programme transforming Hitler's status from a seedy local agitator to a potential national saviour in process, but more importantly caused a major turning point in the twentieth century by setting the seeds for the most destructive war ever fought. Almost 40 when he started writing it, Hitler had achieved virtually nothing, but the book constituted a turning point in his career. "Political creeds as the basis for new religions have usually spelt danger for humanity. When they are distilled from the half-baked prejudices harboured by the more reactionary section of a nation not particularly noted for political enlightenment, they spell disaster." (PMM). In November 1923, Hitler was arrested after an unsuccessful Nazi putsch in Berlin. When he said, later, that this defeat was the greatest stroke of luck he ever had, he meant that without it he couldn't have made himself into a popular hero. The trial became a social event, with photographers waiting outside the courtroom. For high treason he couldn't have been given a lower sentence - five years of imprisonment, with the possibility of parole after the first six months. As a prisoner in the Landesberg Fortress, he was given preferential treatment. It was here that he dictated the first volume of Mein Kampf to his associate Rudolf Hess. Just before Christmas 1924, he was released after serving only nine months of his sentence. The first volume sets out his highly tendentious opinions about the world he grew up in, and about the 1914-18 war. It presents his justification for territorial acquisitiveness - Germany needs more Lebensraum - and airs his anti-Semitism. "Although it contained much that was shocking to many Germans, its main sentiments were widely shared in central Europe. A pseudo-mystic racial theory, totally unrelated to fact, was made to support pan-Germanism, anti-Semitism, militarism and ultra-nationalism, the combination of which was to be implemented by the unrestricted use of power as interpreted through the mentality of a superstitious bully" (PMM). Entitled "The National Socialist Movement", volume two (1927) contains most of the ideas later fleshed out in his policies. "This programme, with a detailed account of what it would entail nationally and internationally, is stated with complete frankness in the two volumes of Mein Kampf. The brazenness of the declaration was due to naivety and immaturity. Unfortunately Europe was governed by small men at the time and when Hitler came to power in 1933 he found that his wildest claims and most extravagant actions earned but mild and ineffectual rebuke. His enemies accepted the occupation of the Rhineland, the tearing-up of the Versailles and Locarno Treaties, the abandonment of the League of Nations and the seizure of Austria and Czechoslovakia. Hitler had a right to be surprised at their violent reaction to the attack on Poland. It was all in Mein Kampf, but they just could not believe it" (PMM). Provenance: Emil Garraux (1854-1951) was a Swiss member of the Verein für die Deutsche Sprache and co-author of Deutsches Namenbüchlein für die Westschweiz. Printing and the Mind of Man 415. Item Description: Hutchinson in association with Hurst & Blackett, [1939], 1939. 18 parts, sm. 4to., First Edition thus, with very numerous photographs (many full-page) in the text; original pictorial wrappers printed in colours, wire-stitched as issued, wrappers lightly chafed at extremities as usual, backstrip of four volumes parted but entirely complete, some light age-soiling, the set now preserved in a custom-made burgundy buckram solander case with gilt back. COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST UNEXPURGATED ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF HITLER'S INFAMOUS TREATISE. Translated by James Murphy, it is also the first fully illustrated version in English, with many photographs, illustrations, advertisements and examples of British war propaganda throughout. The printing style of covers varies due to production costs; parts 1-7 are printed in red, yellow and black; parts 8-18 in red and black only. The publisher's blurb on front covers is hardly understated: 'the blue-print of German imperialism'; 'the most widely discussed book of the modern world'. It is ironic that the next statement is 'Royalties on all sales will go the British Red Cross Society'. During publication purchasers could choose from five different binding cases: 'when this work is complete you will say 'what a fine edition!' No case is present here, but we have had the set preserved for the future in a handsome, specially commissioned black buckram solander case. COMPLETE SETS IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS ARE VERY SCARCE. Item Description: Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1939. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. From an auction of modern firsts--which included a historical Lot with a group of books on WWII--- and with the auction tag tipped into the book--a very good copy in red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. 993 pp. Published on the eve of WWII--Hitler's ominous and foreboding diatribe on his vision of the World--and Germany's rightful place at the top. "Just as Germany must inevitably win its rightful place on this earth, should it be led and organized on similar principles". "A State which, in the epoch of race poisoning, dedicates itself to the cherishing of its best racial elements, must some day be master of the world". Hard to believe that this madman could achieve a following of a whole country less than a Century ago. This is the unexpurgated and fully Unabridged Edition with an Introduction by 10 Editors obviously struggling to find something good to say about the publication, Hitler, and Nazism--"Here, then, in its entirety, for the American people to read and to judge for themselves". This edition is the first complete edition published in its entirety in the United States--before had only seen a condensed version published in 1933 with less than half the text. Clean text and no other evidence of previous ownership. A scarce copy of a historical first edition. Bookseller Inventory # cfe14126

Item Description: Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1939. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Reynal & Hitchcock, New York NY, 1939. 8vo., Sixth Impression, endpapers lightly browned as often; original red cloth, gilt back, yellow top, a good- copy without dustwrapper. This translation, the first complete version in English, was effected by a formidable team of American writers, historians and scholars and first published in 1939. Like Dugdale's UK abridgement it is based on the first German editions of 1925 and 1927, but unlike Dugdale it includes the final text in its totality including, for example, a greatly expanded Chapter V in which Hitler describes his wartime reflections on propaganda and on methods for fighting Marxism. All early printings are scarce. This title is offered for sale only as an historical document and may not be purchased by residents of those countries (including Austria, France, Germany and Italy) in which it is banned. 1941. Reynal & Hitchcock, New York NY Contains publisher's 13 page booklet (bound in, after front end page), which includes a review of book by Dorothy Thompson, plus a member list of the committee of sponsors. CONDITION: Good, with some normal type age wear. No tears or markings inside other than a thin red streak at extreme bottom edge of first 10 pages, only discoloration inside are some random age type spots on inside (nothing large or dark or major) and some normal age toning. Also a little extra age type discoloration in gutter of front and back. all typical of dust type collection in storage and aging process. There are some corner tip creases, but no creases across page. Main wear is 1) the spine is faded 2) there are some scratches on both front and back boards, and 3) the outside page edges have darkened with age, plus there is a damp stain to top reading edge, but does not affect readability. Text block is separating from the boards but is still pretty solid. Photos can be requested - I have several but will provide more if needed. Bookseller Inventory # 003761
