Item Description: Houghton Mifflin, 1943. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. The true first edition of the English translation that superseded earlier efforts and has become the standard text. It should be noted that Houghton Mifflin used a highly unusual method of designating its first editions at the time this book was published: no "First Edition" or "First Printing" notice appears on the copyright page, but the publication year appears on the title page below the publishers and printers credit. On all printings after the first, the year is dropped from the title page, and there might or might not be note made of subsequent printings on the copyright page. But the presence of the year on the title page is the gold standard for this title. This is a clean tight unmarked copy, bound in red cloth with black titles. Some shelf wear on bottom edges, slight stain on top edges. Spine slightly faded. The dust jacket has original $2.50 price intact -- note correct value. It is creased vertically through the spine, and horizontally across the entire jacket, probably because it had been folded and tucked into the book, which would also account for the fading on the spine. It is chipped and tattered along top and bottom edges, with some short tears; nonetheless quite decent. Overall an exceptional copy of a hideously important book. We ship all books carefully and securely in sturdy cartons, never in mailng bags. Overweight book will require additional postage for foreign shipping. Bookseller Inventory # 003811

Item Description: Hutchinson in association with Hurst & Blackett, [1939], 1939. 18 parts, sm. 4to., First Edition thus, with very numerous photographs (many full-page) in the text; original pictorial wrappers printed in colours, wire-stitched as issued, wrappers lightly chafed at extremities as usual, backstrip of four volumes parted but entirely complete, some light age-soiling, the set now preserved in a custom-made burgundy buckram solander case with gilt back. COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST UNEXPURGATED ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF HITLER'S INFAMOUS TREATISE. Translated by James Murphy, it is also the first fully illustrated version in English, with many photographs, illustrations, advertisements and examples of British war propaganda throughout. The printing style of covers varies due to production costs; parts 1-7 are printed in red, yellow and black; parts 8-18 in red and black only. The publisher's blurb on front covers is hardly understated: 'the blue-print of German imperialism'; 'the most widely discussed book of the modern world'. It is ironic that the next statement is 'Royalties on all sales will go the British Red Cross Society'. During publication purchasers could choose from five different binding cases: 'when this work is complete you will say 'what a fine edition!' No case is present here, but we have had the set preserved for the future in a handsome, specially commissioned black buckram solander case. COMPLETE SETS IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS ARE VERY SCARCE. Item Description: Twin Palms Publishers, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1996. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Limited edition of 100 numbered copies (this being #44/100), signed by Levinthal, in a clamshell box, with an original silver dye bleach print (dye destruction print, Cibachrome) by the artist (paper size 10 x 8 inches; image size 9-7/8 x 7-7/8 inches), also numbered and signed by Levinthal. Hardcover. Cloth, with tipped-in plate and debossed title on spine, no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by David Levinthal. Texts by cartoonist Garry Trudeau, essayist Roger Rosenblatt, and Holocaust historian James Young. 88 pp. with 59 four-color plates. 13-1/4 x 11-1/4 inches. New in publisher's original packaging (book, print and clamshell box all in flawless, pristine condition). From the publisher: "Since his first publication in 1977, Hitler Moves East, photographer David Levinthal has explored a panoply of compelling issues in representation. Using toy soldiers, dolls, and other figurines, Levinthal, in Mein Kampf has created dramatic tableaux which engage the narrative of Hitler's rise to power and the Nazi campaign to wipe out the Jews and other marginal groups of people. Although miniature in scale, Levinthal's Storm Troopers, concentration camps guards and Hitler's complicit phalanx assume monumental proportions photographed with the Polaroid 20 x 24" studio camera. Shot against flaming red skies, and cold, steel-blue interiors, the spectacle of military pageantry and the senseless slaughter of men, women, and children converge in a disturbing critique of collective memory." Item Description: R. U. P. Schweizer Zweig der Weltaktion für den Frieden, Zürich, 1938. Softcover. Book Condition: g+. First edition. Octavo. 32pp. Original printed wrappers. This scarce anti-Nazi booklet outlines the unlawful aims of the Nazi leadership as written by Hitler himself in his "Mein Kampf." The book may be described as the blueprint of the Nazi aggression. Its whole tenor and content demonstrate that the Nazi pursuit of aggressive designs was no mere accident arising out of an immediate political situation in Europe and the world. "Mein Kampf" establishes unequivocally that the use of aggressive war to serve German aims in foreign policy was part of the very creed of the Nazi party. Wrappers sunned and slightly creased along edges. Previous owner's stamp on upper margin of first page (Harry Schulze-Wilde*). Text in German. Wrappers in overall good-, interior in good+ to very good condition. * Harry Paul Schulze (pseudonym: Harry Schulze-Wilde) (1899-1978) was a German journalist and writer renowned for his fierce opposition to Hitler and the Nazis. "Just as Germany must inevitably win its rightful place on this earth, should it be led and organized on similar principles". "A State which, in the epoch of race poisoning, dedicates itself to the cherishing of its best racial elements, must some day be master of the world". Hard to believe that this madman could achieve a following of a whole country less than a Century ago. This is the unexpurgated and fully Unabridged Edition with an Introduction by 10 Editors obviously struggling to find something good to say about the publication, Hitler, and Nazism--"Here, then, in its entirety, for the American people to read and to judge for themselves". This edition is the first complete edition published in its entirety in the United States--before had only seen a condensed version published in 1933 with less than half the text. Red cloth in very good condition--only slightly toned, the gilt lettering to the spine that is almost faded and the spine itself is moderately tone darkened from age. Clean text and no other evidence of previous ownership. A scarce copy of a historical first edition. Bookseller Inventory # cfe14126

Item Description: Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 1996. Hardcover. Book Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 87 pages. Published in 1996. Landmark collection of color photographs on subject. One of the most important photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 3500 copies. Although not called for, this particular copy is signed and comes in the publisher's original clamshell box. An austerely elegant production by David Levinthal and Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the front cover and red titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographs by David Levinthal. Essays by Roger Rosenblatt, Garry Trudeau, and James E. Young. This is Levinthal's second collaboration with Trudeau, the creator of "Doonesbury". Black cloth clamshell box with red titles embossed on spine. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Japan to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents David Levinthal's "Mein Kampf". His sequel/companion volume to "Hitler Moves East" (1977). The latter consists of black-and-white photographs; the present collection is entirely in color. Like his other collections built around compelling themes, "Mein Kampf", whose title is adopted from Adolf Hitler's autobiography/political manifesto, tells an unforgettable photo-narrative about a Past that continues to haunt the Present. It is not possible to imagine a more demonic figure than Hitler and a more evil ideology than Nazism. What makes "Mein Kampf" permanently disturbing is Levinthal's point that Hitler may be long dead, but his legacy is very much alive, is very much with us. Photographing his toy artifacts is an artistic strategy that is now identified with the artist. Levinthal is a collector twice over: First, of vintage toys, which are valuable in and of themselves (Levinthal's photographs would not have the same power if the toys were new or merely replicas, therefore not "collectible"); second, of images by their photographer/collector, who deploys a highly developed technique that enables him to make the toys come, uncannily, to life. As such, Levinthal's body of work is finally about aesthetics versus ethics, the paradox of the aesthetically pleasing photograph (which seduces) despite its ethically horrific subject (which repels). The photographs are beautiful, which is not the same thing as saying they glorify their subject. They do not. Instead, their beauty paradoxically makes us more aware of the fact that evil persists. An absolute "must-have" title for David Levinthal collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by David Levinthal. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Although not called for, this copy comes in the publisher's original clamshell box, making its presentation quite special as such, and providing enhanced protection for the book itself. A rare signed copy thus. 59 color plates. One of the greatest photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAVID LEVINTHAL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0944092403.
