About this Item: ReInk Books, 2017. Softcover. Condition: NEW. Reprinted from edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. This paperback book is SEWN, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of paperback binding. It can also be open wide. The pages will not fall out and will be around for a lot longer than normal paperbacks. This print on demand book is printed on high quality acid-free paper. About this Item: London: for the author, 1744., 1744. 8vo., (7 4/8 x 4 6/8 inches). 18-page list of Subscribers, 2-page explanation of the plates at end (early repair to top margin of page 3, one or two spots and pale marginal stains). Folding engraved frontispiece (bound after the title-page, mount strengthened on the verso) and 4 further folding plates by T. Loveday. Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked to style, endpapers renewed). First edition, and a lovingly detailed description of the behaviour and anatomy of the honey-bee, and the sometimes gentle art of bee-keeping. "The last Part to be examined, and the most curious of all, is the Spear, which certainly hath a Polish -exceedingly fine, and is without Dispute a most exquisite Piece, and the Point imperceptible. This penetrating Instrument is distinguished, and commonly known by the Name of the Sting, by which these Insects defend themselves against Men and Beasts, and offend their Enemies" (page 63). The fine engraved frontispiece by Loveday is re-working of the original engraving of the honey-bee in three profiles by Stelluti, a friend of Galileo, and a founding member of the renowned Accademia dei Lyncei, the first important scientific society founded in Europe. Galileo was a fellow-member of the academy, and it was his microscope that Stelluti used for his observations. His microscopic illustrations of the honey bee appeared in an extremely rare broadside by Federigo Cesi in 1625 (only two copies recorded by Wellcome), and were later included in an edition of "Persio" in 1630. The final engraving in the "Melisselogia" shows the author at his library desk examining subdued honey-bees whose hives can be seen through the open windows. Seller Inventory # 72nhr159
