Item Description: Times-Union, Jacksonville, Fl, 1884. Flexible green cloth covers, title in gilt to front cover. Interior lightly age-toned, some light foxing and offsetting to end-papers. Aside from this and some light rubbing to extremities of binding, a very good copy. First edition. This work is one of the few sources of primary information on the role of Florida troops who served in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Charles Seton Fleming (1839-1864) served as Captain of Company G, 2nd Florida Cavalry, and was killed at the second battle of Cold Harbor near Gaines' Farm, Virginia. The author (1841-1908), Seton's brother, was the governor of Florida between 1889 and 1893. A democrat, he was a strong opponent of civil rights for blacks and a supporter of segregation. He is known locally for removing from office Florida's only black judge, James Dean of Monroe County, because he had married a white man to a black woman. Bookseller Inventory # 12844
