About this Item: London: 1928., Macmillan and Co., 1928. Hardcover. Condition: VG orig. navy cloth. xvii, 396 p.; 8 pl.; 22 cm. `Ritual should never be neglected. In itself it availeth nothing. But it is the means whereby the reverence of the many may be directed towards true devotion. We none of us find worship easy; we all need the assistance of earthly means. The grand and simple dignity of Cathedral service has minis tered to many a humble, pious soul, and supplied that blessed instrument of sustained adoration which will rank among the holiest, happiest moments in the lives of sin-wearied and sorrow-burdened men' (163) -- `In his sermons there was no attempt at oratory; they were marked by a plain directness and even homeliness of speech. Yet they had a power peculiarly their own. The Bishop of Manchester [William Temple] writes of "the wonder of his simple Gospel preaching". "I do not think", he adds, "I have ever heard such exqui sitely beautiful preaching of the simple Gospel. I remember particularly a sermon on Love, based on I Cor. xiii., and a sermon preached on the morning of a Christmas Day. There was not a sentence which the simplest person present would fail to understand; but the beauty which made the message so effective came from a sympathy wider and deeper than it is given to most men to experience, and from the mental discipline of his fine scholarship. The language of those sermons was perfectly simple, but it was also simply perfect."' (295) -- `During the first two years of his rule at Westminster the Dean was disturbed by a succession of demonstrations in the Abbey by the Suffragettes. These demonstrations culminated in June 1914, as everyone will remember, in an attempt to blow up the Coronation Chair.' (297). Seller Inventory # 025497
