Item Description: London: John Hatchard and Son, 1848., 1848. Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845) was a Quaker, reformer and philanthropist. She was a pioneer in the reformation of English prisons. Following meetings with prison authorities and prisoners, Fry and her assistants created a system of classification of the prisoners, prison dress, constant supervision by a matron and monitors, religious and elementary education, and paid employment. As a result of her efforts, prisoner conduct improved considerably. FryÕs work culminated in the founding of the Ladies Association for the Reformation of the Female Prisoners in Newgate in 1817; it became the British Ladies Society for Promoting the Reformation of Female Prisoners in 1821. It is likely the first nationwide womenÕs organization in Britain. Memoir of the Life of Elizabeth Fry is a publication of her papers, chosen with the approval of various family members. The extracts from her journal and other writings highlight the religious nature of her mind and the development of her Christian character Two volumes, octavo. . 16 (ads), xxii, 521; viii, 540 pp. Engraved frontisportrait of Fry by J.J. Hinchcliff from a portrait by Mrs. Charles Pearson in Vol I.; engraved frontispiece in Vol. II and three text illustrations. PublisherÕs purple cloth stamped decoratively and ruled in blind with a gilt-lettered spine Binding extremities lightly rubbed with slight fading, toning, and soiling to cloth. Intermittent very light foxing. The occasional small chip or tear. Pencil signature on front flyleaf of both volumes. A very good, tight set. Second edition, revised and enlarged. The first edition was published in 1847. Bookseller Inventory # 16341

Item Description: Charles Gilpin / John Hatchard & Sons, London, 1847. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Not Issued. First Edition. 1847 two-volume set (complete). GOOD+. WITH ORIGINAL LETTER PENNED BY ELIZABETH FRY laid in. Good+ condition. The only marking in the book is an owner name and date (Caroline Elizabeth Clay, March 10, 1848) neatly penned on the front free endpapers. Frontispiece illustrations moderately foxed but other pages are clean and fresh. Vol. I frontispiece is a silhouette portrait of Mrs. Fry. Vol. II frontis is a steel engraved portrait by Mr. Charles Pearson, with a reproduction of Mrs. Fry's notation and signature. Each frontispiece has a tissue guard. There is also a full page engraving of Plashet House in Vol. II. Bindings, in dark green cloth hardcovers with decorative blind stamping on all panels and gilt-stamped titles on spines, are tender but intact. Covers are clean with moderate edge wear - chipping and tearing to cloth at spine ends; corners bumped and worn to board. Book blocks are intact, no splits, cracks, pulled or loose pages. Rear hinge to Vol. 1 has split- the rear cover is held by neatly applied hinge tape to interior of hinge. Front endpaper of Vol. I is torn along the hinge, the hinge is loose but remains in intact. Volume 2 hinges tender but intact. The laid in letter, in Elizabeth Fry's hand, is on an 8-7/8 x 7-1/4" sheet of ivory paper, folded to 4 pages (folded size 4-3/16 x 7-1/4"). The letter was written from Plachet (aka Plashet) House, on 8th Dec. 1821. (12th Mo, 8th, 1821 at salutation). It is of most interesting content; addressed "Dear Friend" and expressing sympathy for the friend's dangerously ill son. Mrs. Fry tells of a planned upcoming visit to Brixton house of correction, perhaps in company with her brother, with a possible visit to her friend if the little boy "should then be better." The letter is signed by Elizabeth Fry and is in Very Good condition - old folding lines evident and some minor edge wear, otherwise clean and complete. Whether Caroline Elizabeth Clay was the "dear friend" who received this letter, I cannot say. The letter remains with books, as found. SIZE: 6 x 9". Volume I: xii + 495 pages plus four publisher advertising pages at end. Volume II: viii + 524 pages plus engraved plate of Plashet House, and four publisher advertising pages at end.
