Item Description: New York: Charles Scribner's Sons [Scribner], 1886., 1886. VOLUME II ONLY of a two volume set. Reprint (first published in 1855). iii-viii, 9-581 pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 13.25cm. Original dark olive cloth; a few light stains to boards with a few mottled patches along their beveled edges; staining at spine heel; spine's gilt stamped lettering remains bright. Some foxing to toned edges; front free endpaper removed; strong foxing to front pastedown and rear endpapers; past owner's ink inscription upon front pastedown with scarce Selma, Alabama bookseller ink stamp for Walter S. Butler at top left; interior pages remain mostly clean. Book's first text leaf is title/copyright which is evidently pages iii-iv so book is likely missing a half-title; binding slightly shaken between front flyleaf and opposing title/copyright but otherwise firm. Only a good copy. Bibliographic reference: Wright Howes U.S. IANA P-571 (but citing the earlier editions of 1855, 1856, and 1858). Although born and educated in Maine, Seargent Smith Prentiss (1808-1850) rose to prominence in Mississippi as a lawyer practicing in Natchez and Vicksburg. He was elected to the Mississippi State House of Representatives for the 1836-1837 term and served in the US Congress from May 30, 1838, to March 3, 1839 after contesting the election of John F.H. Claiborne. A supporter of the Whig Party, Prentiss is best remembered for his eloquent oratory and, in particular, his speeches upon the House floor where, according to legend, Senator Daniel Webster would switch chambers on such occasions so as to hear his colleague speak. Prentiss failed in his bid for the US Senate in 1840 and thereafter moved to New Orleans and resumed practicing law. Bookseller Inventory # JUN17-08224

Item Description: New York: Charles Scribner [Scribner's - Scribners], 1855., 1855. VOLUME I ONLY of a two volume set. First edition (per matching 1855 dates in Roman and Arabic numbers on title and copyright pages respectively). i-xii, 13-382 pages. Hardcover: H 19.25cm x L 13cm. Original brown cloth; stains to boards with several small surface chips to cloth, wear along board edges particularly at bumped corners, rear board tenuously attached by single binding thread; bottom 9.5cm of spine cloth lacking with quire tips exposed at heel, short swath of heel cloth still attached to front board and tucked in at front endpapers, remaining top part of spine cloth worn fractionally below text block's top edge, tearing to cloth along rear joint but attached at front joint and thus with some curling and lifting from underlying paper backstrip, some rubbing and flaking to spine's gilt title lettering but it still easily legible. Edges toned; several small dark stains to top edge. Past owner's ink signature (probably late 19th century) on front pastedown with scarce orange antebellum bookseller ticket for D.C. Richards & Son, Columbus, Miss. at top left corner. Two-line antiquarian ink ownership inscription "J.H. Sharp | Columbus 1,53 [?]" on front free endpaper. As the signature matches examples handled in the past, it is easily attributable to Confederate Army Brigadier General Jacob Hunter Sharp who was a Columbus attorney prior to the Civil War and who resumed his legal career post-war as well as being editor and publisher of the Columbus Independent and serving in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Toning and moisture staining to front and rear endpapers; light shallow staining intermittently affecting many top page margins; moisture stain at bottom of front flyleaf with pencil page notes near top; mostly light to mild foxing and/or toning to interior leaves; moisture staining at bottom margins of last 12 leaves or so; occasional pencil and light ink margin marks mostly corresponding to aforementioned page notations on front fly. A poor copy which needs to be re-backed but one with a scarce Civil War association. {Bibliographic reference: Wright Howes U.S. IANA P-571.} Although born and educated in Maine, Seargent Smith Prentiss (1808-1850) rose to prominence in Mississippi as a lawyer practicing in Natchez and Vicksburg. He was elected to the Mississippi State House of Representatives for the 1836-1837 term and served in the US Congress from May 30, 1838, to March 3, 1839 after contesting the election of John F.H.
