About this Item: Pierre Marteau [Elzevier?], 1687. LEATHER BOUND. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. B07FYJ7CKD In French. 1687 first edition Pierre Marteau (Cologne, Germany) [a pseudonymous publishing house, possibly actually Elzevier of Amsterdam], 3 5/8 x 6 inches tall full leather bound, double gilt ruled boards, five raised bands and elaborate gilt decoration to spine, gilt-lettered brown leather label to spine, all page edges marbled and gilt, marbled endpapers with pastedowns framed by gilt dentelles, ribbon marker sewn in, [16], 456, [20] pp. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, chipping/fraying to top spine cap, and mild bumping to tips. Contemporary heraldic bookplate to front pastedown. Otherwise, apart from a couple of instances of very slight foxing, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this uncommon imprint. ~SP25~ [1.5P] The memoirs of Henri de Beauvau II (1610-1683), who was made Marquis de Beauvau by Louis XIV in 1664. Charles IV (1604-1675) was Duke of Lorraine from 1624 until his death in 1675, with a brief interruption in 1634, when he abdicated under French pressure in favor of his younger brother, Nicholas Francis. Pierre Marteau (French for Peter Hammer) was the imprint of a supposed publishing house. Allegedly located in Cologne from the 17th century onward, contemporaries were well-aware that such a publishing house never actually existed. Instead, the imprint was a fiction under which publishers and printers - in the Netherlands, France and Germany - evaded the open identification with books they published. Particularly given the distinctive globe printer's device, this volume would appear to have been produced by the celebrated publishing house Elzevier of Amsterdam. Seller Inventory # SP25-0781-9489
