About this Item: University of California Press : with the Huntington Library, Berkeley, California, USA, 1949. Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Red cloth on boards. 422 pp. Volume has weak front hinge, just starting to tear at the top of front gutter, minor edgewear, corners are thinking about being bumped. Jacket shows moderate wear, chipped along the top edges, light soil, a tear on the rear panel from the top near the spine fold, spine is faded with splash (?) spots. All four corners are clipped. Now in clear cover. "A parallel four-text edition of Benjamin Franklin's Memoirs, including Franklin's original manuscript, the French translation by Louis Guillaume le Veillard, the French translation published by Buisson, and the William Temple Franklin edition. Max Farrand of the Huntington Library was convinced that no acceptable text of the autobiography had ever been published. Benjamin Franklin supervised the making of two 'fair copies' of his memoirs, complete with his revisions and final intentions. Unfortunately, both of the 'fair copies' have been lost. The original manuscript is published here for the first time as Franklin wrote it. Le Veillard's translation is published here also for the first time. The other French translation presented in this volume includes only the first part of the Memoirs. It was published in 1792 by Buisson. The William Temple Franklin edition (1818) is based on a 'fair copy' which Franklin's grandson edited to make it more genteel.". Price Clipped. Seller Inventory # OS001011
