Item Description: Henry Colburn, London, 1843. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Early Edition. These memoirs by the faithful attendant of the unfortunate French Queen, who was convicted of treason and executed by guillotine in October 1793 after the French Revolution, give us a fascinating glimpse of tumultuous times. This early two-volume set was published in England 20 years after the original French edition appeared in 1823 following the death of the author. The books are bound in original decorative brown cloth with gilt titling to spine. Volume I comprises engraved portrait frontispiece of Marie Antoinette, title-page and 447 pages, while Volume II comprises engraved portrait frontispiece of Madame Campan, title-page and 462 pages plus two page Publisher's Catalogue. The condition of the set is as follows - digital photos available on request; the books are both somewhat bumped at head and tail of spine and are rather bumped and worn on the corners, particularly on the bottom corner of the front board of Volume I, which has become creased on the inside of the cover by the front paste-down endpaper. The volumes are slightly faded on the spine although the titling remains clear and quite bright. There is a very small nick in the cloth on the edge of the spine adjoining the back joint of Volume I; there is also a small tear in the cloth near the tail of the spine of Volume II which has been neatly repaired but is still evident; the covers are rubbed and marked in places. The front endpaper of Volume I has a two-inch split at the top of the inner hinge; the frontispiece of Volume I has a diagonal crease below the top corner and is a bit thumbed and creased on the bottom corner - it is also just slightly foxed; the frontispiece of Volume II is free of creases but is moderately foxed. Several pages of the text in both volumes are a little ragged where they have been clumsily cut; there is occasional slight darkening and foxing of the pages - overall however, the text remains clean. The edges of the page block are quite darkened and dust-marked with age, but notwithstanding this and other detailed points noted, the set remains sound and quite handsome for its age. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 001200
