Item Description: George Barrie & Sons, Philadelphia. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Limited Edition. Very handsome book, part of a larger set, but a stand-alone title in excellent condition -- even retains its scrace blue dustkacket. This shows two 1" closed tears to top front edge, but are hardly visible in brand new mylar. The dark blue boards have a moire appearance and the paste-on title box at spine is crisp and clean with no chips. Top edges are gilded and side pages rough-cut. Book is a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies of which this is #516. Books are illustrated with images printed on Japan paper. These are photogravures, but the portrait at frontis is in color. Though billed as Louis XV's memoits, they are actually taken from the memoirs of Madame Du Hausett, the lady's maid to Madame Du Pompadour. Very accessible to the modern reader. Six illustratiosn and 283 pages. NO DATE. Bookseller Inventory # 27256

Item Description: London: Bradbury & Evans, 1856, 1856. Octavo (182 x 121 mm). Near-contemporary tan half calf, titles to red sheep label to spine, raised bands gilt, marbled sides, edges and endpapers. Boards slightly bowed, light rubbing to extremities, foxing to prelims and endmatter; an excellent copy. Vignette to title page. First edition in book form of Thackeray's first novel (additionally published in the same year as part of Vol. 3 of Thackeray's four volume Miscellanies, again published by Bradbury & Evans). Originally published serially in 1844 in Fraser's Magazine as The Luck of Barry Lyndon, it was intended to expose "the real unlikeable greed, cruelty, lack of conscience, and vulgarity of the criminal mind", however, "readers' understandable dislike of the narrator, Barry himself, extended inappropriately to the author, and the magazine's editors asked Thackeray to shut the story down after ten instalments" (ODNB). Uncommon edition, traced at auction just 10 times in the last 108 years. Bookseller Inventory # 117672
