Small, attractive, bookplates to front pastedowns, otherwise no signs of prior ownership. Slight rubbing to extremities and minor darkening to spines. Gilt remains sharp and bright. A presentation copy from the publishers. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and armorial decoration, with blindstamped decoration. The gilt armorial decoration to the boards is the Armorial Bearings of the Two Ducal Dynasties of Urbino, marshalled and impaled with that of the Papal Gonfaloniere. Complete in Three Volumes. With Forty-Five Illustrations. Appears to have been bound without Illustration XXXVI, or we may have missed it. With a List of Authorites for the Work to the front of Volume One. Bound by Westleys & Co. , with a bookbinder's label to the rear pastedown of Volume One. With the armorial bookplate of S. E. Widdrington to the front pastedowns. Direct from the library at Newton Hall, the 18th century country house and estate in Northumberland, with a pencil shelfmark to the front free-endpaper. James Dennistoun, of Dennistoun, 1803 - 1855, was an antiquary and art collector. Dennistoun was a magistrate and deputy lieutenant for the county of Renfrew, and became a member of most of the societies formed for collecting materials for illustrating the history of Scotland, with a particular interest, for example, in the history of Dunbartonshire. . . His most significant work, however, was Memoirs of the dukes of Urbino, illustrating the arms, arts, and literature of Italy from 1440 to 1630 (3 vols. , 1851), which combined his interest in early Italian history, art, and literature -ODNB. Condition: The bindings are generally tight and firm, with the cords exposed in a few places. The front hingesof volumes one and threeare just starting, and the rear hingeof volume three has cracked. There is some wear to the extremities,including some bumping and rubbing, with discolouration to the boards, and sunning to the spines. Internally the pages have slight browning and the occasional spot or mark, prominent to the first and last few pages. With closed tears toseveral of theplates.
