No date but enclosed ephemera suggests a date of 1959. Lrge 8vo (22cm). In the uniform sea green cloth, gilt titles to spine, maroon endpapers, maroon stained top edges. Unclipped dust jackets. Scarlet cloth bound slipcase with large paper title label mounted to LH panel of slipcase. A very bright set, showing little or no signs of use. Slipcase is unmarked, and bar two small impressions to the LHS, is in fine condition. Very minor rubs to spine ends of dust jackets only. Despite the later appearance of an unexpurgated translation of the memoirs, Machen's translation has reigned supreme in the English speaking world, and was a remarkable achievement in its own right, spread out as it is over 4,000 plus pages. A fabulous set and scarce in slipcase in this condition. Enclosed within the slipcase, an appealing ephemera, the original card customs form, dated June 1959, to accompany the set from New York to a named customer and address in Somerset, with a price recorded of $50 for the set.
