Item Description: London: Printed for John Sackfield and sold by J. Roberts 1717., 1717. 8vo., pp. viii, 104, title-page a little soiled; and pp. 24, title-page with black mourning border; bound with around 20 blanks at beginning and end and a five page manuscript 'Memorandum' (see below); late eighteenth century tree calf, upper joint rehinged, some repairs to spine; ownership inscription of Charles Henry Fox M.D., Edinburgh, 1895.First editions of posthumous recollections about the life of courtier-financier Fox (1627-1716), the grandfather of C. J. Fox.Fox held various positions in the royal household. 'A court education, and command of languages, provided the gloss that made him acceptable in aristocratic circles; government connections reassured lenders in the money markets and all those who dealt with him seem to have found him trustworthy' (Oxford DNB). Pittis's Memoirs emphasize the esteem in which he was held, as well as offering a detailed account of his courtly life. Eyre's sermon reviews Fox's charitable work. The volume includes two manuscript notes; one (five pages), entitled 'Mr. Ferguson's Memorandum concerning Sir Stephen Fox', dated Edinburgh, 1787, claims that Fox was a Scot, originally named Stephen Tod, and was an employee of Charles II in exile, and later 'a domestick' of the Duke of Lauderdale. Ferguson claims to have had this on authority from acquaintances and later confirmed by his friend George Turnbull, writer to the signet (d. 1760). Ferguson was able to examine Fox's correspondence, and used it to construct a 'genealogical tree' of the family to 'prove' his assertion. The other note (two pages) explains that George Turnbull was distantly related to Fox through his wife. Language: English. Bookseller Inventory # E2726
