Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2017. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott, Bart, Vol. 2 The year 1815 may be considered as, for Scott s peaceful tenor of life, an eventful one. That which followed has left almost its only traces in the successive appearance of nine volumes, which attest the prodigal genius, and hardly less astonishing industry of the man. Early in January were published Paul s Letters to his Kinsfolk, of which I need not say more than that they were received with lively curiosity, and general, though not vociferous applause. The first edition was an octavo, of 6000 copies; and it was followed, in the course of the next two or three years, by a second and a third, amounting together to 3000 more. The popularity of the novelist was at its height; and this admitted, if not avowed, specimen of Scott s prose, must have been perceived, by all who had any share of discrimination, to ?ow from the same pen. Item Description: Robert Cadell Edinburgh (1847 and 1844 respectively), 1847. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. These two books, Scott's Poetical Works and the biography of Scott by his son-in-law and literary executor, were given in matching bindings as an Eton College prize to William Edward Ridler in 1848 - so it seems a shame to split them. Lockhart's Life is the earlier publication, 1844 and is described as "A new edition, complete in one volume". 806 pages, engraved frontispiece portrait of Scott and fold out facsimile of Scott's writing. The Poetical Works are described as "Complete in one volume, with all his introductions and notes, also Various Readings and the Editor's Notes" - the editor being Lockhart. Engraved title page showing Abbotsford by W Miller after J M W Turner, 823 pages, and also a fold out facsimile of The Lady of the Lake in Scott's hand. Both books in half calf bindings with marbled paper boards and marbled endpapers, tooled gilt spines with dark green labels, all edges marbled. Internal condition excellent in both vols, very slight foxing to both engraved plates, none elsewhere, no marks, pasted in prize labels to inside front boards. Externally joints are starting but holding, rubbing to extremities, heads of both spines have partial losses especially Poetical Works. Overall very good. P S regarding W E Ridler - was at Eton 1845-1850, subsequently Kings College Cambridge becoming a fellow, died young in 1860 and is buried in Mill Road cemetery, Cambridge. Item Description: - Edinburgh and London - Robert Cadell and John Murray and Whittaker and Co, 1837. Hardcover. Book Condition: GOOD ONLY. First edition. Thefascinating anddefinitivebiography of Sir Walter Scott, edited by his friend and son in law. First Edition. Complete in seven volumes. With a frontispiece and folding facsimile plate of the handwriting of Sir Walter Scott to volume I. Publisher's catalogues to front or rear of most volumes. Bookseller's label of C. O. Brien, Limerick, to frontpastedown of volume VII. John Gibson Lockhart (12 July 1794 25 November 1854) was a Scottish writer and editor. He is best known as the author of this work. This biography has been called the second most admirable in the English language, after Boswell's Life of Johnson. In it are published a great number of Scott's letters. Lockhart began contributing to Blackwood's Magazine translations of Spanish ballads, which in 1823 were published separately. In 1818 the young man attracted the notice of Sir Walter Scott, and he married Scott's eldest daughter Sophia in April 1820. Between 1818 and 1825 Lockhart worked indefatigably. In 1819 Peter's Letters to his Kinsfolk appeared, and in 1822 he edited Peter Motteux's edition of Don Quixote, to which he prefixed a life of Cervantes. Four novels followed: Valerius in 1821, Some passages in the Life of Adam Blair, Minister of Gospel at Cross Meikle in 1822, Reginald Dalton in 1823 and Matthew Wald in 1824. But his strength did not lie in novel writing. In 1825 Lockhart accepted the editorship of the Quarterly Review, which had been in the hands of Sir John Taylor Coleridge since William Gifford's resignation in 1824. Condition: In original publisher's cloth bindings with paper spine labels. Externally rubbed, one board detached, one joint cracked with splitting to the cloth along several joints. Loss to paper spine labels. Four hinges held by cords and paper only, four strained. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean, aside from some light scattered spotting.
