A life in letters of the grammarian and author of schoolbooks, Lindley Murray, 1745-1826. Born to a Quaker family in Pennsylvania, Murray moved to York after the American Revolution where he began writing school textbooks. His best known work, The English Reader, was described by Abraham Lincoln as 'the best schoolbook ever put in the hands of an American youth'; over 16 million of his books were sold in America and another 4 million in Britain.

Second British edition, 8vo, pp. xiv, [2], 296; engraved frontispiece portrait, 1 engraved facsimile; the last 9 pages of text comprise an unusual set of publisher's advertisements; spine a little scuffed and one small crack starting at the top of the upper joint, else good and sound in contemporary quarter green calf over marbled boards, red morocco label on gilt-decorated spine. The first York edition appeared in 1826, and a Philadelphia edition the following year.
