Item Description: 1928. First Edition. SASSOON, Siegfried. Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man. WITH: Memoirs Of An Infantry Officer. WITH: Sherston's Progress. London: Faber & Gwyer; Faber & Faber, 1928, 1930, (1936). Three volumes. Octavo, modern full black morocco, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Housed in a custom felt-lined slipcase. $2200.First trade editions of Sassoon’s fictionalized autobiographical trilogy, handsomely and uniformly bound.Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, Sassoon's first prose work, inaugurated his fictionalized autobiographical trilogy by winning two of England's most coveted literary awards, the 1928 Hawthornden Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. It was followed by Memoirs of an Infantry Officer and Sherston's Progress, the latter reflecting one of his pennames. Sassoon's trilogy earned high praise for "precise and yet passionate" insight into the terrible cost of war and his evocative portrayal of "English society, politics and literature" (New York Times). This first trade edition was published anonymously and precedes the signed limited edition that followed later that same year, bearing Sassoon's name. The latter two volumes were issued simultaneously with the signed limited issues. Keynes A30b; A33b; A40b. Fine condition, a handsome set. Bookseller Inventory # 107274

Item Description: London: Faber and Gwyer,/Faber & Faber, 1928–36, 1928. 3 volumes, octavo. Original blue buckram, titles to spines in gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Spines faded to brown, periphery of boards lightly sunned, dark stain to spine of vol. III, internally clean. An excellent set. Signed limited editions of the complete Sherston Trilogy: Fox-Hunting Man, number 33 of 260 copies; Memoirs of an Infantry Officer, number 464 of 750 copies; Sherston's Progress, number 206 0f 300 copies. Infantry Officer and Sherston's Progress are first editions, published simultaneously with the first trade editions; Fox-Hunting Man was issued one month after the trade edition and "was an afterthought, made when the success of the ordinary edition was assured and the identity of the author known" (Keynes). "In the late 1920s Sassoon turned to prose, drawing on his pre-war diaries and those for the first quarter of 1916 for his Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man. This was published in 1928, anonymously, though his name appeared in the second impression. This lightly fictionalized autobiography of his early years in Kent, in which he figures as the narrator George Sherston, was an immediate success, was awarded the Hawthornden and James Tait Black memorial prizes, and was quickly accepted as a classic of its kind—an elegy for a way of life which had gone for ever. He continued the story in Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930) and Sherston's Progress (1936)" (Rupert Hart-Davis in ODNB). Provenance: bookplate of Maxwell Steinhardt (1889-1977), a "lawyer and an avid book collector. an admirer of George Bernard Shaw, [he] was president of the Shaw Society of America. Mr. Steinhardt graduated from Harvard in 1910, and Harvard Law School in 1913. He served in France in World War I as an army captain" (New York Times obituary); he was also a member of the prestigious Grolier Club. The bookplate was specially commissioned from the great American illustrator Rockwell Kent (see Don E. Roberts, Rockwell Kent: The Art of the Bookplate). Keynes A30b, A33b, A406.
