About this Item: [Published and for sale by F.H. Lamb], printed by Clay Printing Co., Winston-Salem, [Mount Airy, N.C.], 1929. First edition. [Mount Airy, N.C.: Published and for sale by F.H. Lamb], printed by Clay Printing Co., Winston-Salem, 1929. [Publisher from front wrap.] 133 pages. Illustrated with a few photographs printed with the text. Original printed tan wraps. [19.8 cm.] Very good. Tiny chip to head of spine; light creasing and small scuff near upper corner of front wrap; some faint soiling to wraps. Slight marginal soiling and a little creasing to title page; interior otherwise clean. First edition? One of three issues in 1929 of no determined priority. [The two other issues had slightly different pagination. One was printed by R. L. Gardner in Mt. Airy, N.C., and the other by Alwith Pub. Co. in Madison, N.C. I have also seen the current issue in a variant of green wraps.] On March 14, 1912, a courtroom gun battle in Hillsville, Virginia, left five dead, including the presiding judge, prosecutor, and the sheriff. The defendant in the trial was Floyd Allen, who was convicted of witness intimidation. After the judge handed down a year's prison sentence for this crime, Floyd Allen and several armed kinfolk, including his brother, Sidna Allen, opened fire on the court officials. While the Allen family claimed the sheriff fired first, a jury found Floyd and his son, Claude, guilty of murder, and they were both executed. Sidna Allen was sentenced to 35 years for his crimes, but was pardoned in 1926. See Haynes 306 (Madison printing). Seller Inventory # 0000377
