Item Description: Presbrey-Leland Studios, Valhalla, NY, 1937. Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 16 pages; This book illustrates typical monuments and markers in New York's outstanding exhibit of moderate priced memorials. Fourteen of the sixteen pages have photographs of memorial stones, head stones, grave stones, benchs and sculptures in various price ranges from $50 on up to $450 and a group of larger monuments for which quotes can be obtained. Contents are printed on coated paper (glossy stock). Clean and secure in original printed gray wrappers with elaborate "P / L" emblem embossed in blind on front wrapper. The Presbrey-Leland Company "Designers and Workers in Stone" was formed by the merger of The Presbrey-Coykendall Company and the W.W. Leland Studios around 1920 . Mr. William Henry Deacy, architect in charge of Leland Studio, was appointed Director of Design with a large staff of creative artists and architectural draftsmen. The company's goal was "the awakening of a national interest in the Cemetery Beautiful" arising from the unselfish spirit and cooperation of the Artist-Craftsman and the Cemetery Official. In Barre, Vermont, Presbrey-Leland operated the largest retail granite working plant and at their Studio in New York City they execute the magnificent designs of the creative department. They have long been one of America's leading designers and workers in stone. Bookseller Inventory # 41564

Item Description: Ringwalt & Co., Printers,, Philadelphia:, 1859. First edition.. 8vo, original printed light brown wrappers, 40 pages. "On the evening of the 24th of August, 1858, after we had returned from a dance, he locked the room door, and said he would get his pistols out of his trunk and shoot me. . . . He said that he had married me for my money; that he did not care anything about me; that he hoped I would die in six months; that he had another lady whom he liked very much, and intended to marry. He expected, when he married me, that I would give him control of my property, and die." Emilie Grigg married Horace B. Fry on August 2, 1858 and left him on September 11, 1858. Besides his violent and abusive behavior, Horace Fry evidently "sent to my father the Police Gazette, containing a slanderous attack upon my character as a wife." Because the state courts would not grant her a divorce unless her life was endangered, she was forced to petition for legislative relief. In addition to the graphic testimony from her father and eloquent pleading from counsel, includes extensive testimony from West Point cadet O. J. Wagner, to whom Emilie had been linked (adding another layer of public scandal). Though his name is given in the press and this account as O. J. Wagner, this cadet seems almost certainly the Philadelphia native and West Point class of 1859 graduate Orlando G. Wagner, who served as an Army engineer in New Mexico and was then killed in battle at Yorktown in 1862. Wrappers somewhat chipped and toned; old light vertical crease throughout; a good, sound copy.
