About this Item: ReInk Books, 2017. Softcover. Condition: NEW. Reprinted from edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. This paperback book is SEWN, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of paperback binding. About this Item: Philadelphia: Isaac Ashmead, 1845., 1845. Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 52 pp. Original wrappers. Pieces missing from bottom half of spine. Wrappers wrinkled. Vertical crease. Two holes punched in inner margin. "State Library" written in ink on front wrapper. First Edition. "In America in the 1840s there were only thirteen institutions for the mentally ill providing less than 2,500 beds (and none at all for mental defectives). This was the state of affairs when in March 1841 Miss Dix, a schoolmistress, took the Sunday School Service for the female convicts at East Cambridge Jail, Massachusetts. She was so appalled by the indiscriminate mixing of insane with criminals, healthy with sick, herded together in terrible conditions, that she from then on devoted herself to the cause of the insane. By 1880 when her life’s work was done there were 123 institutions for the insane in America, 75 of them State hospitals of which 32 had been founded directly by her efforts" (Hunter & Macalpine, Three Hundred Years of Psychiatry, p. 911). The Dixmont Hospital--established in Pennsylvania in 1847 as the result of Dix's efforts--was the only institution for which Dix permitted the use of her name. See Deutsch, Mentally Ill in America, 2d ed., pp. 158-85. Cordasco 40-0353. Seller Inventory # 13550
