About this Item: Banner Press, 1924. Soft Cover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. Softpaper wraps, scuffed a bit and slightly torn at bottom of spine, where paper is beginning to separate a bit. Author has signed it on the title page, where there is a closed tear (repaired) of about four inches. Previous owner's inscription on title page in pencil. Interior is clean, somewhat age-toned, but still attractive. Handle with care, but overall a decent copy. Gillis was one of Twain's printers. Black-and-white photographs throughout. Stoker. Steve Gillis, a printer in San Francisco, was Twain's closest friend and roommate. For four months Twain lived with two brothers of Steve who were mining in Jackass Hill along with another miner, Jacob Stoker, who was the original of Dick Baker in "Roughing It". About this Item: The Banner, Sonora, California, 1924. Paperback. Condition: Good Plus. First Edition. 96 pages. Frontis photo of Twain, five illustrations. Signed by the author on the title page. Stapled stiff green wraps with titles in black. Spine rubbed, light wear to front, some soiling to back wrap. Bumps to front margin of first two pages, text clean, binding tight. Steve Gillis [1838-1913] was one of Twain's closest Nevada friends. Gillis trained as a typesetter and was foreman of the Territorial Enterprise when Twain joned the paper in 1862. In 1894 Gillis moved to Jackass Hill where he lived with his brothers James and William, both of whom were miners. In parts of 1864 and 1865 he lived with Steve and his brother William, and it was at Angels Camp in February, 1865 that he first heard a version of the Jumping Frog story. This was later expanded and reissued as "Gold Rush Days with Mark Twain," 1930. Steve Gillis had gone to San Francisco in 1853 and worked on the "San Francisco Herald" during the days of the Vigilantes and the resurrection of San Francisco until 1857 when he headed to Oregon to work on the "Messenger." In 1861 when the "Territorial Enterprise" was established at Virginia City Gillis went there and it was there that he became close friends with Mark Twain, Dan DeQuille and others writers.
