Item Description: San Francisco: Bergez-Frank's Old Poodle Dog Restaurant,1908, 1908. Book Condition: Good. 32pp. 5.5 x 9.25 inches; illustrated throughout. Some losses to colored covers due to having stuck to other copies. Interiors very good. In 1908, the owners of the Poodle Dog, the Old Poodle Dog, John Bergez Restaurant and Frank's Rotisserie merged their businesses, opening Bush Street and Claude Lane under Lalanne with partners Jean B. Pon, Jean Bergez, Louis Coutard and Camille Mailhebeau. The restaurant now boasted five floors; the top floor offered a ballroom. A side door mimicked the earlier establishment with a birdcage elevator that took the men and their "companions" upstairs. They brought the elegance of the Nineties back to San Francisco as the Bergez-Franks Old Poodle Dog. The cuisine reflected the skills of some of the finest French chefs in the city but also included innovations unique to San Francisco. The original Louis Dressing originated in the Bergez-Franks Old Poodle Dog circa 1908; a product of the skills of Louis Coutard. Bookseller Inventory # 51-1077

Item Description: Tsingtao 1940, U.S. Navy Club. Stiff white wrs.,folded price list of wine, liquors & food, [6] pages, folded 3 times, some old stains, prices hand penned in, folds down to 11.2 x 20.9 cm.,opens to 33.5 x 20.9 cm.,back page stained,"as is" only. This is an obscure and rare item. * The U.S. Navy from the Asiatic Fleet often made stops along the Eastern coast of China in the 1920's down to the 1940's. Tsingtao [Qingdao], Shanghai and Hong Kong were the main liberty ports and were loaded with whisky bars, girls and entertainment of all kinds. Everything a deprived sailor needs to recharge his batteries ! * This menu is interesting. It states on the cover in red ink: "NO LIQUOR ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE CLUB" & "INSPECT YOUR CHECK BEFORE PAYING." Then in black it clearly states under "MENU" "Count your change; see that the cashier puts Club Stamp on all bills. No mistake will be corrected after leaving cashier. If service is unsatisfactory or in case of error please have a boy call Director on duty." * With these printed warnings on the menu, the club could regularly expect some kind of trouble from the drunken sailors. * Most likely American sailors commonly got fairly drunk and got into fights with the club when it got time to pay. The Chinese were known to "pad the bill" especially for drunken sailors, by adding all sorts of items the less than lucid sailors could not recognize or even remember. * CONDITION: This item has some old stains, and is sold "as is." This item is NOT refundable, please see scans on our website prior to ordering. ***. Bookseller Inventory # 32047101
