Item Description: 1939. First Edition. WILDER, Thornton. The Merchant of Yonkers. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1939. Octavo, original pale orange cloth, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket. $3800.First edition, inscribed on the half title by Wilder in the year of publication, the year after he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Our Town, "For —- —-, Greetings of Thornton Wilder, New Haven, April 27, 1939." A beautiful copy.Wilder’s Merchant of Yonkers premiered in Boston and New York in 1938, the same year his play, Our Town, won the Pulitzer Prize. "Perhaps Wilder’s most popular work," The Merchant of Yonkers was "his adaptation of one of Nestroy’s farces (Einen Jux will er sich machen, based on A Day Well Spent by John Oxenford). Merchant of Yonkers, later revised by Wilder and titled The Matchmaker, ran "in New York from December 1955 to February 2, 1957 The musical comedy version of the latter—Hello, Dolly!—ran in New York from January 16, 1964, to December 27, 1970" (Selected Letters, 364n). "A spectacular success," Michael Stewart’s libretto for Hello, Dolly! closely followed Wilder’s comedy (Hartnoll, 892). Copyright page with "4-9 First Edition," Code of "C-O" indicating publication in March 1939. Bruccoli & Clark III:367. Book fine; very lightest edge-wear to colorful about-fine dust jacket. Signed. Item Description: New York: Harper & Brothers, 1939, 1939. First Edition. Fine in a very good or slightly better dust jacket. Presentation copy, inscribed by Wilder in 1939; ÒD.T. from T.W. Greetings + best wishes. New Haven, August 21 1939.Ó This play was initially unsuccessful, closing on Broadway in January, 1939, but served as the basis for the phenomenon that was Hello Dolly! WilderÕs inscriptions are common, but are seldom found in this title. Failing definitive research, one might speculate that the ÒD.T.Ó could have been Deems Taylor or Dorothy Thompson, the former appearing more likely, given his participation in theater and film. Item Description: Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1939. Hardcover. First Edition. SIGNED and not inscribed by the author on the title page in New Haven in July 1940 and quite scarce thus as Wilder nearly always inscribed books rather than simply signing unless it were for a limited edition. This is also a scarce Review Copy with a folded 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of green paper with Harper's letterhead giving the publication date as 13 April 1939 and with a long paragraph describing the origin of the play and a few details about its production. Wilder based MERCHANT on a play by Johann Nestroy dating back to Vienna of 1842. Initially a flop, MERCHANT was revised by Wilder into the Broadway hit THE MATCHMAKER, which in turn was later transformed into the monster musical HELLO, DOLLY!, the title song helping to thrust Louis Armstrong from the isolated world of jazz into popular American culture. Though there is no physical indication of such, this is from the collection of coal baron La Fayette Butler, many of whose books were left untouched from the time of purchase until their sale in the summer of 1999. A tight, crisp copy in a close to Fine dustwrapper with gentle wear to the head of the spine which is very mildly sunned. Triple Crown Winner: Signed, Review Copy, and simply Lovely condition. Fine in a Fine dustwrapper. Bookseller Inventory # 011267
