Item Description: Doubleday Classics, 1958. Decorative Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good +. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good -. Howard Pyle (illustrator). First Thus. The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood(of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire), Written and Illustrated by Howard Pyle, was published by Doubleday Classics in, I'm estimating/guessing, 1958. Not an ex-library copy, this 351-page offering is in VG+/VG- condition. The book is in rather remarkable shape for its presumed age, its sole weaknesses being some modest yellowing of its pages, as well as its endpapers front and back, and a tiny nick on the bottom edge, near the outer corner/tip, of the front cover board. The dust jacket is still in quite overall nice shape, too, although clear taping was necessary in 4-5 random spots to repair/shore up small tears, and there is somewhat noticeable shelf wear at top and bottom edges of jacket's spine. NOTE: It is the style of the art work on the jacket's front cover section and the design/manner of the "ads" on the back cover section that lead me to think that this offering, Reader, may well be a number of years older than I have indicated--it's almost certainly no newer. From front/back inside flaps, "The adventures of Robin Hood are among the most thrilling tales in our entire literary heritage. Now you will find the complete stories of the merry crew in this one fine volume--from the time Robin himself first flees to Sherwood Forest, through scores of the most exciting tales you've ever read! Here you will find fabulous stories about how all Robin's men join the green-clad outlaw band--Will Scarlet, the Miller, Allan a Dale, Little John, and all the rest! .You'll love Friar Tuck.one of the fattest, jolliest, most sly, and most kindhearted rogues you'll ever find--in any reading. And you won't want to miss a single page telling how Robin outwits the Sheriff of Nottingham. In this famous Howard Pyle version(featuring Pyle's wonderful drawings), these stories provide a once-in-a-lifetime reading pleasure." Offering also includes author's original Preface, a most extensive Table of Contents, and the previously-mentioned exquisite Decorations and Drawings throughout. Thank you!!. Item Description: Charles Scribners Sons, NY, 1883. Book Condition: Good+ with no dust jacket. 0 B&W Illustrations; BAL 16378 bound in an apparently very scarce black/brown leather with an elaborate stamped design differing from the brown cloth noted in BAL. River Campus Libraries has a picture of the binding on it's site that conforms to this one. The photo here has been exaggerated to show detail. Other than that if conforms to all first edition points including all edges orange. There were 510 sets of sheets sent to Sampson Low in England and this might account for it. Unsophisticated copy with losses to upper right edge of spine. Printed in red and black. Contents are firm and clean. Full bound in original black leather. In custom red morocco fall down case. Item Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, NY, 1883. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Pyle, Howard (illustrator). First Edition. Interior meets all points outlined in BAL 16378, title page in red and black, laid paper, brown coated endpapers, etc. except for the fact that this is the clothbound edition that appears to be as rare as the leather bound version. For many years it was thought that the leather version was the only one produced. Ahearn, "Collected Books," p. 552 lists a cloth first as being produced as well in 1883. This was also Howard Pyle's first book as an author. They rarely come up. First Issue. xx, 296 pp. 8vo. Brown cloth covered-boards with intricate Pyle design on the cover and spine stamped in black and orange with gold embossed titling to cover and spine. Considerable fraying to cloth at head and spine, losses at base. Corners of boards have bumping and small losses. Small bookseller label at base of first free endpaper at gutter, previous owner's signature on second free endpaper. The signature gathering of pages 99-110 loose but holding to text block by top thread. Custom mylar dust jacket protects cloth. Bookseller Inventory # 25278
