About this Item: Arkstee et Merkus / Desaint et Saillant, Durand, Amsterdam & Leipzig, Paris, 1757. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First printing. First printing, 1757, vol. I only. 4to, old leather, (10) cxxxiv, 159, 58 plates, almost all hand colored, many of which are folding plates, some of artillery and battle formations, but many of military men and uniforms and of chevaliers and their horses. Fair to good copy with wear to leather, front board reattached with japanese paper, foxing and evidence of damp staining to contents, the plates are mainly good to very good showing foxing, and only a handful of the plates showing tide marks and tan stains from damp staining. Light waviness to most of the plates, also bespeaking its time in damp circumstances. But all the plates are pleasing, with contemporary hand coloring and this is a a rare book. Old owner (probably 19th C.) has also stamped his namestamp at least a dozen times throughout (Ex-Libris Rene Fauvelle) including on the borders of some plates. The stamp is fading in most cases. L'édition, portant une fausse adresse londonienne, est illustrée de 2 planches gravées à l'eau-forte, dont l'une placée en frontispice, d'après des dessins de Claude-Louis Desrais datés de 1771. About this Item: Amsterdam and Leipzig, Arkstrée et Merkus; Paris, Desaint and Saillant, Durand, 1757, 1757. 2 volumes, quarto (280 × 210 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral and foliate tools, red morocco title piece, green stained and gilt "numbering piece", gilt barred edge-roll, green silk page-markers, edges sprinkled in red. Some light browning, one plate slightly misfolded and standing proud at the fore-edge, some light shelf-wear, corners a little soft, head- and tailcaps scuffed, but overall a very good set. 84 plates, 37 of them folding, 4 of them coloured, wood-engraved head- and tailpieces. First edition thus. "De Saxe's work is a comprehensive treatise on war. He puts forward his ideal military model, his "legion", and taking issue with the views and practices of his age, he advances many original ideas. However, rather than discussing his military doctrines, the aim of this book is to elucidate the intellectual premises that dominated his mind: he saw a need to subject military affairs to reasoned criticism and intellectual treatment, and the ensuing military doctrines were perceived as forming a definitive system." [Gat The Origins of Military Thought, p.33] Carlyle described it as a "strange military farrago, dictated, as I should think, under opium", which is perhaps not entirely as unfair as it may seem, a note on the original MS at Dresden reads, "I composed this work in Thirteen nights: I was ill, therefore, it may perhaps bear marks of the fever which I had. This ought to excuse the regularity of the arrangement, as also the elegance of style. I wrote in a military manner and to kill time." Whatever the oddness of its style the Reveries. was immensely influential, reprinted three times in 1757 and again in 1761 and 1763, German editions of 1757 and 1767 and English of 1757, 1759 and 1776. The Macclesfield copies with the Shirburn Castle blind stamp through the prelims. and bookplates to the front endpapers, that on the pastedowns being that of Lieutenant-General George Lane Parker, younger son of the Second Earl, who served for more than twenty years in the 1st Foot Guards. In 1773 at rank of Major-General he was appointed Colonel of the 20th Foot and saw service in the War of Independence. One of his contributions to the Shirburn Castle Library was a remarkable collection of books detailing the professional interests of a soldier in the latter part of the C18th. A handsome and well-provenanced set of this important work. Jähns II, 1502; Brunet V, 174. Seller Inventory # 37954

About this Item: Arkstee et Merkus, Amsterdam, Liepzig, 1757. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Complete 2 vol set, 4tos. (11.75 inches each), with contemporary full leather, gilt French fillet borders, gilt and decorative spines (legible), generally in excellent conditon but for some edgewear, most evidnt at front board corners of volume one. Interior is near fine condition, wide margins, with all 84 plates (58 in vol. I; 26 in vol. II) by engravers such as Tardieu, Moitte and others. Woodcuts on sectional title pages. Wide margins, almost no foxing, Brunet IV 174 [8592]. Vol. I: j-cxxxiv, 159 pages (plus title page, advertissement) plus plates; Vol. II: 259 pp plus plates. A few plates with partial color. Original endpapers present. There was an English edition published shortly after this original French one, but it lacked the nuances present in the original language, and missed much detail because of that (see "Roots of Strategy", ed. Brig. Gen. Thomas R. Phillips, originally published 1940 with later paperback issues). Saxe was the eldest of roughly 350 'illegitmate' children of Frederick Augustus, King of Poland. Saxe was one of the most respected military minds in history, and had begun military tutelage by age 12. This edition was issued posthumously, with more plates than a smaller, earlier version. (For a military evaluation of Saxe, see L. Hart's "Great Captains Unveiled", 1934, among other references available.) This is quite a remarkable and historically significant set of volumes, particularly in this condition with the full complement of plates, which depict many military themes including uniforms, battle schemes, artillery, cavalry and more. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Seller Inventory # 3184
