The cultural landscapes around us are the result of struggle, negotiation, and conflict. That is landscapes are quite literally formed out of 'culture wars' that is the conflicts concerning questions of identity, values, and control over meaning. Think for a moment about what it takes to create the landscape one sees when driving or walking around the city. How did the streets get there Who decided that the houses, mosques, churches and grave yards should be where they are Who decided what they should look like What does the landscape mean Does it mean the same thing for everyone or do some places have more meaning for some groups of people and less for others All of these questions are indeed questions of power. Who has the power to construct the landscape and define what it means 104 pp. Englisch.

The study adopted explorative method of research using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. A total of two hundred and two respondents were sampled. There were sixty-eight executive and active members of CBOs who participated in eight Focus Group Discussion (FGD) sessions; up to 120 questionnaires were administered on residents of the six Local Government Areas of the metropolis; and as many as fourteen stakeholders were engaged in in-depth Interviews. CBOs are self-help associations established with the major objective of social and economic development of the communities they live in and beyond. Findings of this research revealed that CBOs perform various environmental sanitation activities including: construction and maintenance of bridges, culverts and drainages, clearing of grave yards, spray against malaria, pests and insects, mobilization campaigns and public enlightenment on the importance of sanitizing the environment.
