About this Item: Gallo & Co. Editors, Mexico City, 1876. First English language edition. Folio (15 x 11 in/ 38 x 28 cm), pp 211, and 32 sepia lithographed plates, color lithographed title page, and folding map. All of the lithograph plates in this copy have been hand-colored, except for the 2 plates depicting the engineers and "projectors" involved in the project. The book was commissioned to celebrate the completion of the Vera Cruz - Mexico City railroad line. Palau (25913/25914) does not specify the number of plates that should be present, but from auction records it is clear that this copy is complete in all respects: the Spanish-language edition was published in 1874, with the same number of plates and the map. The striking lithographs were executed by Hesiquio Iriarte, arguably the finest lithographer of Mexico. Bound in the original brown blind-stamped cloth, with gilt title material and the original ornate spine, raised bands, gilt fleurons, title material. The plates are in fine condition, as is the text. The cleanness of the text and plates is unusual. Quite nice copy of a book that, when it does show up, is often incomplete or in poor condition. Images gladly sent on request.
