The accuracy of hiswork is attested to by the contemporary naval biographer W.R.O'Bynre and they enable a clear impression to be gained of thepersonalities being dealt with. . Pearce's achievement was thathe put the flesh upon the bones of the subject, and for that hisworks have placed polar historians in his debt". I.R. Stone, PolarRecord, 1988. Between 1851 and 1877, Stephen Pearce (1819-1904),painted, among other subjects, portraits of most of thedistinguished 19th century British Arctic explorers.
