Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very rare first edition of the third issue of the reborn Granta, champion of new writing, which grew to be one of the best known, most widely read and longest enduring of a notoriously ephemeral species, the literary magazine. Includes two chapters from Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children (the only pre-publication of any part of that book). Grantas 1,2 and 3 are now almost always seen only as reprints with a new cover, in a design which became the Granta house style for all issues subsequent to this one. Other writers who were or later became well known, contributed to Granta 3 (though none of them were as celebrated or controversial as Rushdie) included Angela Carter, Alan Sillitoe, Russell Hoban, Emma Tenant and Lorna Sage. This copy of Granta 3 is quite well preserved despite its 42 years. However, the ochre paper wrap is a little tarnished in places; there is a tiny tear at the bottom of the front cover where it meets the spine and there is a previous resale price written in pencil on the first inside page. See five photos of this magazine and do ask for more if that would help.

Attractively bound in burgundy cloth spine and gray paper-covered boards.Very clean and tight throughout. Signed "Salman Rushdie"on the title page. In a complete and striking dust jacket with some light dampstaining along the bottom edges of the rear panel. Overall, an attractive copy, signed. Midnight's Children is a 1981 novel by Indian-British writer Salman Rushdie, published by Jonathan Cape with cover design by Bill Botten, about India's transition from British colonial rule to independence and partition. It is a postcolonial, postmodern and magical realist story told by its chief protagonist, Saleem Sinai, set in the context of historical events. The style of preserving history with fictional accounts is self-reflexive. Midnight's Children sold over one million copies in the UK alone and won the Booker Prize and James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1981.[1] It was awarded the "Booker of Bookers" Prize and the best all-time prize winners in 1993 and 2008 to celebrate the Booker Prize 25th and 40th anniversary.[2][3][4][5] In 2003 the novel appeared at number 100 on the BBC's The Big Read poll which determined the UK's "best-loved novels" of all time.
