Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. "Midnight's Children" by Salman Rushdie. Published in 1980 by Penguin Books. First Edition, First Printing "Born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, at the precise moment of India's independence, the infant Saleem is celebrated in the press & welcomed by Prime Minister Nehru himself. But this coincidence of birth has consequences Saleem is not prepared for: telepathic powers that connect him with 1,000 other "midnight's children"--all born in the initial hour of India's independence--& an uncanny sense of smell that allows him to sniff out dangers others cannot perceive. Ebullient, operatic, comic, & serious, this novel is a wild, astonishing evocation of the maturity of a vast & complicated land & its people--a brilliant incarnation of the universal human comedy, Indian-style." Book is in Very Good condition. Slight rubbing & edgewear on the covers. NO spine creases! Interior is in Very Good condition. Pages are bright and clean with a bit of browning at the margins. First edition, first printing of the Booker Prize winning novel. Printed by Jonathan Cape but using American sheets and boards. Very good but marked boards in very good price clipped and ill fitting and thus very scarce first state dustjacket with the usual fading to the spine. (I believe the first batch of dustjackets were slightly too small for the American imports and were replaced). The book was previously the property of a BBC journalist, so the book was probably a review copy, hence the first state dustjacket.
