About this Item: London: Constable & Co., 1914, 1914. "The Most Complete and Beautiful Specimen Before Us of an Illustrated Book as a Single Work of Art"(The Times Literary Supplement)[ROBINSON, W. Heath, illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, [William]. Shakespeare's Comedy of A Midsummer-Night's Dream. With Illustrations by W. Heath Robinson. London: Constable & Co., 1914. Edition DeLuxe. 1/250 copies signed by W. Heath Robinson (this copy being #143). Large quarto (11 5/8 x 8 7/8 inches; 295 x 225 mm.). xii, [iv], 185, [2], [1, printer's imprint] pp. Twelve mounted color plates, each with a titled tissue-guard. Forty-seven full-page (including title) and nineteen smaller black and white drawings in the text (the "List of Illustrations" lists thirty-two full-page black and white drawings).Handsomely rebound ca. 1970 in full dark green calf, covers ruled in gilt, spine with five raised bands ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, marbled end-papers, top edge rough trimmed, others uncut. A very nice example of this very scarce Heath Robinson signed limited edition."The streams of fairies and goblins floating across the woodland scenes in Heath Robinson's illustrations to A Midsummer Night's Dream are very much like Dicky Doyle's little figures on the cover of Punch, yet these illustrations are among the most personal and most successful that Heath Robinson ever drew." (Lewis)."There are several very pretty coloured plates, including one of a tree-lined river bank, with Heath Robinson's inevitable foxgloves in the foreground, a Greek temple across the river and the reclining figures of Hermia and Helena 'Emptying our bosoms of their counsel sweet', but the black-and-white drawings are the illustrations that add such distinction to this edition of A Midsummer Night's Dream, of which he was so justly proud." (Lewis)."At the height of his powers as an illustrator. this book was to be his finest achievement. In it he consolidated all that he had learnt during the past eighteen years. Heath Robinson considered [the] book to be his greatest achievement, and when it was published in October 1914 a reviewer [in the Times Literary Supplement, Dec. 10, 1914] described it as: 'The most complete and beautiful specimen before us of an illustrated book as a single work of art'" (W. Heath Robinson The Inventive Comic Genius of Our Age, p. 19).Geoffrey Beare, The Illustrations of W. Heath Robinson, p. 127John Lewis, Heath Robinson, p. 216Langston Day, The Life and Art of W. Heath Robinson, p. 269. Seller Inventory # 03562

About this Item: Constable and Co, London, 1914. HardBack. Condition: Good. First edition. 1st and Limited Edition, this being number 100 of 250 copies, Signed and Numbered by the Illustrator, Heath Robinson, to the Limitation Page. Superb and increasingly uncommon Full White Vellum Edition. Of the 250 copies printed for this limited Edition, not all were vellum bound, and it is thought that not all were signed. The copy in hand is thus doubly desirable.Thick Royal 4to. [ii] + xii + [iv] + 185pp. + [iii]. Profuse and lavish illustrations by the magnificent Heath Robinson, who was justly proud of them, including; twelve wonderful full-page tipped-in coloured plates with frontispiece, collated excellent all present and correct with 5 of 12 intact captioned tissueguards remaining. Also stunning and abundant black and white line-drawn illustrations, including 32 full-page plate illustrations as called for, collated excellent all present, and in addition, vignette front free endpaper illustration, illustrated title-page, vignette and full-page illustration to preliminary leaves, illustrated full-page Act commencements, sign offs and valeditctions. Printed with wide margins on handmade deckle edged paper, with ‘Van Gelder’ watermark, silk ribbon bookmark. Excellent internally, good clean tight sound square, no bookplate, inscriptions or ownership marks of any kind. Offset to endpapers not intruding or detracting, otherwise remarkably free from foxing and browning, cracked to upper hinge with webbing visible to head, holding firm. Beautifully bound in bright gilt ruled and illustrated full white vellum leather, featuring an illustration from the text, Titania, Queen of the Fairies, and her train, embossed in gilt to spine and upper. Antiquarian vellum seldom escapes dustsoiling, as is the case here, and is fragile, here with 2 closed tears, 2 and 3cm to head of spine, easily glued but left for purposes of full disclosure to the purchaser, lower board is gently bowed. Top edge bright gilt, rest untrimmed deckle edged. Vellum is made from calf skin, and increasingly rare. Acts of Parliament are written upon vellum as it stands the test of time, unlike any other written media. The oldest extant law dates from 1497, and was written on vellum; the Magna Carta was written on vellum 800 years ago, and is still clearly legible. Vellum making upholds a tradition over 2,000 years old. Only a single vellum maker remains in Britain. Paul wright, manager of William Cowley says; ‘The only reason we know as much as we do about previous civilisations is because they scribbled on vellum.’ The volume in hand is a delight for reader, scholar and collector alike, fit to grace any library and of interest for four reasons; the lavish illustrations, the signature of their creator Heath Robinson, the Limited and Numbered Edition, and the Vellum binding. Incurs additional postage charge due to price and weight, for safe delivery. signed by author. Seller Inventory # 100092816
