Item Description: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1939. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. First Edition. Early Printing -- title page undated. The first printing has $1.50 flap price and we see only one copy with that important first issue point for sale. Later printings that are price-clipped retain all other jacket first issue points --namely Choo Choo listed on rear flap and abbreviated publisher name (H.M. Co.) on spine, as does this copy. This wordy explanation is meant to inform that a clipped jacket may indicate a later printing and not a "very early printing" depending on what you call an early printing. This copy has a flap price of $2.75. We have another copy -- a stated 22nd printing with a $3.25 flap price so this one is perhaps (taking a wild stab here) a 10th printing? A 15th printing? Who knows? Certainly not an "early printing." And if you are going to plunk down thousands of dollars for a true First issue, find one with the $1.50 flap price because marrying a later issue price-clipped jacket to a first issue book (with dated title page) is not an uncommon practice. Decorative cloth with lightly worn corners, else tight, bright and unmarked. Jacket has several small tears and chips, but looks spiffy in archival sleeve. Bookseller Inventory # 094720

Item Description: Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1939. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Virginia Lee Burton (illustrator). A very early issue of this Virgina Lee Burton classic, even uncommon as such. Probably the 3rd issue of the 1939 1st edition, with its salmon-colored boards (instead of gray), its lack of the 1939 date on the title page and a $3.00 price (rather than $1.50) on the dustjacket flap. Still though, with no further printings mentioned on the copyright page and the reference on the rear inner-flap (as the 1st issue of the 1st edition also has) to Virginia Lee Burton's "Choo Choo", this is undoutedly a very early printing. And an impressive, well-preserved copy to boot. Tight and VG+ (with very light creasing along a number of the pages) in a crisp, price-intact, VG+ dustjacket, with light creasing --and several small closed tears-- to the panel edges. Still though, bright and very presentable. Oblong octavo, wonderfully illustrated thruout in ruch color by the redoubtable Virginia Lee Burton. Bookseller Inventory # 14151

Item Description: Houghton Mifflin Company, NEW YORK, 1939. Hardcover. Virginia Lee Burton (illustrator). FIRST EDITION. First Edition, in probable second issue dj with all requisite points (1939 on title page, advertisement for Choo Choo on rear dustjacket flap, title only to yellow dustjacket spine with publisher's name abbreviated, except price on front flap, which is $2. Five or six small closed tears at bottom of pages, plus some kidsmudging. bottom quarter of several pages appears smudged, erased maybe. A really well-loved copy. Dust jacket Very good minus, with a chip, a closed tear, and two small rubbed through places on spine. Solid copy of beloved children's classic, alas-yet-appropriately, owned and finger-loved, by children! Story features Mike Mulligan and his beloved steam shovel Mary Anne, who together, with pride and craft, excavated dirt for highways, railroads, skyscrapers, and canals. Faced with impinging pressure from newfangled gasoline- and diesel-powered motor shovels, Mike and Mary Anne felt edged out. Finally the two of them landed a job excavating for the new town hall in Popperville and here the story turns. Must read the book, for this and other reasons, not least among them being that it was this bookseller's FBE - FAVORITE BOOK EVER! Good Plus in Very Good Minus Dustjacket. The jacket has strong vibrant colors with no rips, no chips, no edgewear, no fading, and no rubbing. The first state jacket is identifiable by the requisite price of $1.50 on the inner flap, and the bearing the ad for Choo-Choo on the rear flap, and a yellow spine that just has the book title followed by an abbreviation for the publisher, ¿H.M. CO¿, with no mention of the author¿s name. Please note the price of $1.50 on the inner flap is fully necessary to determine the first state jacket, as even second state jackets have the same features except the price on the flap. Item Description: BURTON,VIRGINIA LEE. MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL. Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1939 (1939). Oblong (9 1/2 x 8 1/2"), pictorial cloth, FINE condition in a dust wrapper that is NOT price clipped (dw has shelf soil, narrow 1/2" wide chip off upper right corner, spine ends slightly frayed else VG+). First edition, first printing of this classic, illustrated with rich colors by the author to accompany the wonderful story of an Irish steam shovel operator and his beloved steam shovel Mary Anne. Burton, along with Sendak and McCloskey is among the handful of author/illustrators of picture books whose talents were equally accomplished in both aspects of creating a successful children's book. Bader (p.199-201) says that "Burton knew exactly what she wanted in a picture book, hers or another's, and she wanted a good deal - information and significant detail as well as the accostomed clarity, humor and imagination. The wonder is that she achieved what she wanted without losing the spontaneity." The result is that her books were read to tatters so very few collectible first editions of this title exist. This is a nice copy in the rare non-price clipped dust wrapper. Bookseller Inventory # 36492
