James Thacher (February 14, 1754 - May 26, 1844) was an American physician and writer, born in Barnstable, Mass. When Thacher was 16 he became an apprentice for Abner Hersey, a doctor from Barnstable, Mass. From 1775 to 1783 he was a surgeon in the Revolution, in the Massachusetts 16th Regiment. Afterward, he practiced in Plymouth, Mass. until his death. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1803. Thacher was stationed at West Point in 1780 and supported the execution by George Washington of the British spy John André. Subtitled: Comprising a detailed account of the principal events & Battles of the Revolution, with their exact dates, & a biographical sketch of the most prominent Generals. Item Description: Hurllbut, Williams & Company, Hartford, CT, 1862. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition First Printing. This book is clean, square and unmarked. The front hinge is split, but the board is held on nicely by the binding strings although the front fly leaf with ads is loose and laid in and there's a 2" split at the bottom of the front joint. It is rubbed. The text block, which is very tight, has 618, minimally toned pages with marbled edges extensively illustrated with plates several which are hand painted bound in what was red cloth covered boards with elaborate gilt decorations on the boards and spine and gilt titles on the spine.
