About this Item: Richardson and Lord, Boston, 1823. hardcover. Condition: good. First. of this period, with numerous Historical Facts and Anecdotes, from the original manuscript. To which is added an Appendix, containing Biographical Sketches of Several General Officers. 603pp. 8vo, later 3/4 black morocco, spine rebacked in new black cloth, retaining portion of morocco spine with the title, some pages with light browning, scattered light foxing, mostly to margins, corners worn, morocco and cloth lightly soiled. Boston: Richardson and Lord, 1823. First Edition Author served in the Continental army as a surgeon. He began in Cambridge and Boston and was present at the surrender of Yorktown. Among his many adventures was witnessing the execution of John Andre. Thacher ".gives a good picture of the spirit of the army, especially under the adverse circumstances of hunger, fatigue and cold, and provides detailed descriptions of men and events almost unequaled by any of his contemporaries." Binding Half Morocco Leather with gilt lettering and bands along spine; marbled boards, endpapers and textblock edge. Easily readable copy. "Query who has got the Bullet 1833 CE" inked on p. 127 next to the description of the discovery and execution of a spy. Top edge of dedication page cut, "London" inked near top edge. Rubbed hinges, small chip at head of spine, moderate edge and corner wear. Marbled boards heavily rubbed, marbled textblock edges faded. Moisture discoloration at top of p. 105-113 and p.482-520.
