About this Item: Smith, Elder & Co., London, 1851. First Edition. Hardbacks. A two volume set re-bound in plain green cloth lettered in gilt on red title-pieces on spine. New end-papers. Ex-library with markings confined to the frontispiece and title page of each volume. Possibly cut-down. Vol. I pp.xvi,309. Vol. II pp.vii,241. Frontispiece to each volume. The title continues: "Interspersed with notices of several of the principal personages who distinguished themselves in the service of the native powers in India." Skinner was an East India Company officer who raised two cavalry regiments for the British Indian Army. Scarce in first edition. Photographs available on request. Seller Inventory # 21435

First edition in VG condition, original blind-stamped yellow cloth with gilt lettering to spines, light shelfwear, darkened spines, octavos, frontispiece portraits, blue endpapers, small bookseller's tickets (Heffer, Cambridge) to front pastedowns and small binder's ticket (Westleys, London) to rear pastedown, rear hinges are a little delicate, xvi+309+(2); viii+241+16 pages, ads at rear of both volumes dated January 1851. The pastedowns contain several previous owner's names, Edw. Foster, Oct 1851; G. W. Finese, Feb 1890, and a more modern owner dated 1973. This is the remarkable story of the "Yellow Boys" and Skinner's Horse, a cavalry regiment still in the Indian Army today. Very rare in the original binding and most desirable.
