Item Description: London and New York - George Routledge and Sons, 1884. Hardcover. Book Condition: GOOD ONLY. Milton's poemsL'Allegro and Il Penseroso thirty illustrationsfrom etchings on steelby Birket Foster including a portrait of Milton from the pictures by Samuel Cooper to title. L'Allegro is a pastoral poem by John Milton published in 1645. L'Allegro (which means the happy man in Italian) is invariably paired with the contrasting pastoral poem, Il Penseroso (the melancholy man), which depicts a similar day spent in contemplation and thought. Il Penseroso is a vision of poetic melancholy by John Milton. The two poems were first published in Milton's 1645 collection of poems,The Poems of Mr. John Milton, both English and Latin, Il Penseroso was presented as a companion piece to L'Allegro, a vision of poetic Mirth. It is uncertain when L'Allegro and Il Pensero were composed, as they do not appear in Milton's Trinity College manuscript of poetry. However, the settings found in the poem suggest that they were possibly composed shortly after Milton left Cambridge. Myles Birket Foster (1825 - 1899) was a popular English illustrator, watercolour artist and engraver in the Victorian period. His name is also to be found as Myles Birkett Foster. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities, rubbing and marks to boards. Internally, hinges and binding strained with some pages loosening and almost detached. Bright but with occasional scattered spotting and handling marks. Overall: GOOD ONLY.
