In addition there were 29 special copies numbered and signed by James Joyce and Lucia. Cover and tail pieces by Lucia Joyce. Limited edition of 1000 numbered copies, this one unnumbered. Jung für schizoid, von ihrem Vater hingegen für hellseherisch begabt gehalten wurde. About this Item: Gotham Book Mart, The Hague: The Servire Press; New York, 1934. 241 x 162 mm. (9 1/2 x 6 3/8"). 4 p.l. (first blank), 77, [3] pp. FIRST EDITION. No. 631 OF 1,000 COPIES on Old Antique Dutch (and 29 special signed copies on Japon.). Plain paper wrappers in white dust jacket, front cover with design by Lucia Joyce printed in blue and silver, blue titling on front cover and spine, ENTIRELY UNOPENED. With the very rare original glassine and housed in a (slightly worn) brown cardboard slipcase. With opening initial and tailpiece designed by Lucia Joyce. Slocum & Cahoon A-43. Glassine a little wrinkled, one corner just lightly bumped, otherwise A PRISTINE COPY. This is another fragment from "Finnegans Wake," beautifully printed in Holland on thick paper using an unusually large, round, and vaguely Medieval typeface. Our copy could hardly be in better condition--as close to mint as one could hope to find, and with all original components. Joyce's daughter Lucia (1907-82) was diagnosed with schizophrenia when in her early twenties and was permanently institutionalized by 1935. She had desperately tried, and failed, to become a dancer, and Joyce was determined to find a new artistic outlet for her, believing it would be therapeutic. He hit upon the design of ornamental capitals like this one, and even went so far as to give publishers the money to pay her for her work. This is another fragment from "Finnegans Wake," beautifully printed in Holland on thick paper using an unusually large, round, and vaguely Medieval typeface. About this Item: 1934. First Edition. JOYCE, James. The Mime of Mick, Nick and the Maggies. A Fragment from Work in Progress. The Hague and London: The Servire Press and Faber and Faber, 1934. Octavo, original printed paper wrappers, uncut, original glassine, original silver cardboard slipcase with pink label. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $2200.First edition of this amusing and affecting portion of Finnegans Wake, number 194 of only 1000 copies printed on Old Antique Dutch paper."Slapstick raised to the status of art" (G.W. Stonier). A fragment of the work that would become Finnegans Wake, The Mime of Mick, Nick and the Maggies was "revised [from] the version originally published in transition [in 1933, which] has only recently been completed by the author." "Joyce alternately described the episode as dealing with 'twilight games' and 'the children's games.' For most readers, however, this is not adequate to describe the chapter's depiction of the continuing human effort to exchange doubt for certainty" (Fargnoli & Gillespie, 149). With an initial letter and tail-piece in seven colors and a cover in three colors, all specially designed by Lucia Joyce, the author's daughter. The thousand copies of the trade edition were issued under four imprints with various slipcases; this copy does have the slipcase of the Faber and Faber issue. There were also 29 copies of this edition signed by Lucia and James Joyce. Slocum and Cahoon 43. Scarce and fragile glassine, almost never present, with a few closed tears. Book and scarce slipcase fine. A desirable copy. Seller Inventory # 105471
