Boards are heavily rubbed and bumped with spine ends worn off. Front hinge is weak with some spine cloth splitting at the joint. Former owner's label on spine is worn. Foxing throughout and a few penciled margin notes. First issue with the word "Animals" misprinted and corrected on the title page. Folding map, 143, [1] advertisements. The tipped in map is on thin tinted paper with blue ink and hand-colored boundaries and railroads. Map has tears where it is tipped in and edge toning. Fine folding "Map of Illinois" by S. Augustus Mitchell engraved in blue ink and hand-colored in outline (professionally repaired tear along fold). Original brown muslin-cloth backed drab printed paper boards (front board detached, one or two stains, a bit browned). Provenance: Contemporary manuscript ownership inscription of ?S. B. Bradly to recto of front free endpaper, dated Oct. 7, 1843. First edition, second issue with "Animals" spelled correctly on the title page. The map by S. Augustus Mitchell (1790-1868) is crisp and bright. "The publisher is probably the author. It was got up mainly to promote the sale of Illinois Lands then owned by John Grigg of Philadelphia" (Sabin). About this Item: for Thomas Jefferys c. 1760., London:, 1760. Edition : First Edition, Contemporary full mottled calf , spine with 5 raised bands, with matching horizontal gilt fillets and gilt lettered title on two, dated; upper edge gilt. , Thomas Jefferys (c. 1719 ? 1771), "Geographer to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, King George III, was an English cartographer and perhaps one of the leading map suppliers of his day. Jefferys engraved and printed maps for government and other official bodies and produced a wide range of commercial maps and atlases, especially of North America. First edition, the corrected issue with the additional leaves 129*-138*, containing information on the capture of Quebec received after the publication of the first part. Jefferys' important description of Canada, Louisiana, and of the French possessions in the West Indies, was published just as the conflict between Britain and France was accelerating, as is demonstrated by the detailed account of the siege of Quebec that was added in this issue. Geographer to the Prince of Wales, Jefferys produced maps and plans after his own surveys and from existing plans by others, including French geographers. The first part includes detailed plans of Quebec, Montreal, New Orleans and the Siege of Quebec, and the second part maps of Guadeloupe, Grenada and 'Martinico' i.e. Martinique.
