About this Item: Angus & Robertson Ltd, London, 1963. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket and illustrations by Clem Seale (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear, chipping and creasing to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed with tiny loss, spine faded. Not price clipped (21s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 201pp, illustrated, map endpapers. 'Minerva Reef' is the incredible true story of the wreck of the Tongan cutter Tuaikaepau on the semi submerged Minerva reef, 380 miles south of Fiji, and of the survival of ten of the original seventeen passengers and crew for two and a half months. To Captain David Fifita goes credit for rare qualities of leadership in keeping the loyalty of the crew of six and the passengers, in maintaining strictest of discipline over disposition of the scantiest of supplies of water and food, in keeping everyone busy with discharge of often artificial duties, and in sustaining a quality of spiritual elevation which has marked the survivors ever since. With the complete loss of their own ship and the discovery of an almost submerged Japanese wreck, they yet managed to maintain life, to nurse the sick, and to build a tiny sailing craft on which, when all hope of rescue faded, the Captain and two others sailed the precarious distance to the Fiji Islands and rescue. New Zealand born journalist Olaf Ruhen (1911-86), served with the RNZAF during the Second World War. In 1947 he moved to Sydney and worked as a journalist for eight years. He became established as a freelance writer during the 1950s, having a number of short stories published in the Saturday evening post. From then until his death in 1989 he published a prolific quantity of documentary and fictional writing, based largely on his extensive travels in Australia, New Guinea and the South Pacific.
