Item Description: Strahan and Murray, London. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. Volumes I & II were published in 1796 by Strahan and Company and Volume III by John Murray in 1815 (all volumes being first editions). Volume I: xvi & 703 pages plus a frontispiece; Volume II: viii & 728 pages; Volume III: x & 693 pages plus a frontispiece, folding genealogical plate and unsigned "Epitaph" leaf. Volumes I and II are in worn contemporary calf, now rebacked in strictly functional modern calf with crudely taped hinges. Leaf C1 in Volume I has had the margin stengthened. Volume III is in the original publisher's paper covered boards with its original paper spine label and in original condition. There is a large triangular chip (2" x 2½" max) missing from the head of the spine and an armorial bookplate inside. Volume III was intended to be uniform with I and II and was sold only on subscription. Chapter XIV of Norton's Bibliography gives an amusing, scholarly account of the confusions, misunderstandings, false starts and changes of plan and publisher that accompanied the appearance of these volumes: "The bibliographical history of Gibbon's Miscellaneous Works must be almost unique in the extent of its documentation" (Norton page 189). Norton 131 & 136; Rothschild 948 & 951 (though this copy has the Epitaph leaf lacking from all the Rothschild copies). Size: 9" x 11½" (235mm x 290mm). Bookseller Inventory # 005860

Item Description: J. Murray, 1814. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. London: Printed for John Murray, 1814. Second edition. Five volumes. Contemporary leather bindings with gilt bands are worn heavily but spines are intact. Interior is in VG condition with no markings and only light foxing. Volume 4 has light ripples to the bottom of a subset of pages. NOT ex-library. Originally published in a two-volume quarto edition, the present enlarged edition was issued in 1814 in five octavo volumes with a substantial quantity of new material from Gibbon's journal, letters, and other papers. Each book contains a "Cozzens" bookplate, which MAY denote prior ownership of Frederick Swartwout Cozzens (1818-1869), New York wine merchant, editor/writer, and friend of William Makepeace Thackeray. This is the second edition of Gibbon's miscellaneous works, greatly expanded from the first. The first edition was published by his close friend Lord Sheffield in two volumes in 1796, two years after Gibbon's death. In 1807 or so, Sheffield began work on a second edition. The second edition contained five volumes, with the old and the new matter rearranged. Book. Bookseller Inventory # L-GI1814H-5
