Premier des ouvrages consacrés par Michaux aux effets des drogues hallucinogènes et point de départ d'une "exploration" qui l'occupera presque exclusivement une décennie durant. L'objet de sa quête se veut sans ambiguité: non pas Èvasion mais acquisition d'une nouvelle forme de connaissance de savoir. Le titre Misérable miracle dit assez qu'il refuse d'être dupe: "J'étais secoué cassé mais je ne marchais pas" Ècrit-il dans l'introduction. Michaux n'est pas le seul à avoir expérimenté les drogues de façon essentiellement méthodique en partie sous contrôle médical - peut-être encore plus proche en cela d'un Jünger que d'un Huxley. Ce qui le distingue sans doute est la conscience douloureuse du prix à payer pour qui entreprend selon le mot de Rimbaud d'Èpuiser en lui tous les poisons. Henri Michaux: peindre composer Ècrire.
