Known for their high quality hand-manufactored publications as the small press “Editions Narcisse” starting in 1927 in Paris extraordinarily cheap wartime newsprint had to be utilized by the Black Sun and Gemor Press in 1943 for this American edition of Eluard and Erns’ts collaboration of 1920 and here translated by Hugh Chisholm. The original work was conceived and published in French and is augmented in this publications by three drawings of Max Ernst: “Vingt ans apres (Twenty Years After)”. Laid in and illustrated invitation on the occasion of the appearance of Misfortunes of the Inmortals with drawings and collages by Max Ernst at the Julien Levy Gallery with handwritten note on it: “Cocktails Wednesday May 12th 5-7 PM”. Original pale pink boards, spine and front cover lettered in black, large design by Ernst printed on plastic backed by yellow paper set into front cover. Housed in a custom yellow cloth solander box. Wear to extremities, joints cracked, spine lacking bottom 5 cm, two marks to rear panel; a very good copy. Illustrated throughout, printed on both yellow and pink wove paper. First edition with text in English, signed limited issue, number 10 of 110 copies on Strathmore Rag Paper in the special covers, signed by the artist; a further 500 trade copies were issued in green boards. This copy is a presentation inscribed by the artist to the title page, "To Kenneth MacPherson, qui m'a aidé à traverser l'Atlantique à la nage. Très cordialement. Max Ernst" (To Kenneth MacPherson, who helped me swim across the Atlantic. Very cordially. Max Ernst). MacPherson, a film maker, "had offered an affidavit at the request of Alfred Barr's wife that had helped enable Max Ernst to get into the United States in 1941". The later collaborated on Dreams That Money Can Buy, an experimental film, in 1947. Originally published as Les malheurs des immortels in Paris, 1922, it is one of the key works of surrealism.
