About this Item: Typis A. Mame, Typographi, Turonibus (turin), 1889. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Presumed first edition thus (no additional printings listed, 1889 date on title and approbation pages). Full red embossed decorative leather, 5 raised bands, stamped gilt lettering, all edges gilt, approximately 9 1/2 x 13 inches, rubrics, ribbon place markers, xliv + 480 pp + 168 pp+ 4 pp supplement for USA, illustrated with 1 steel engraved plate (Crucifixion) and illuminated initial letters (all black and white) , Gregorian notations for music, in Latin only. Hardcover, good. Corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, rubbed and scuffed along edges , approximately 1/4 inch deep chipping at head and foot of spine, a 1/4 and a 3/4 inch chip off front joint, wax drop marks, mainly on rear board. Internally, front and rear hinges cracked, additional hinge cracks between a few of the gatherings, place markers detached (laid-in) , old tape repairs on a dozen or so leaves, 1x2x3 inch piece torn off lower corner of front endpaper, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked. Contemporary gilt tooled full calf with four ornamental brass corner pieces on each cover and two clasps. On the front cover is a large oval stamp containing the Cross, a heart pierced by three arrows and the Holy Monogram within an aureole and an ornamental border. On the back cover is a large oval stamp containing a heart pierced by a sword underneath the letters PIA M (Pia mater) topped with a crown, all within an aureole and an ornamental border. All paper edges gilt. Six large silk ribbon markers. Marbled endpapers. Half-title and both title pages in red and black lettering. Large title vignette of Last Supper engraved by Rudolph Johann Storcklin (1723-1756). Decorative head-, tailpieces, and initials. This handsome and beautifully produced 18th-century Roman missal contains the prescribed prayers, chants and instructions for the celebration of Mass in the Roman Catholic Church. It is splendidly illustrated throughout with 12 full-page engravings (including one with two images) by Rudolph Johann Storcklin and the Klauber brothers (Joseph Sebastian and Johann Baptist).Text and music staves printed in red and black, in double column, within an ornamental border. Texto a dos columnas y a dos tintas, rojo y negro a partes casi iguales. Bellísimamente ilustrado con el grabado de la portada, más de 300 letras capitulares xilografiadas, 11 páginas orladas con grabados miniatura, 35 grabados entre el texto y 10 láminas. Todo iluminado a mano de época a varias tintas. Llegando al fin la marca del impresor también coloreada. Numerosas páginas con partituras y ejemplos musicales, con el pentagrama en rojo. Ejemplar de una impresionante belleza en estampación y decoración, restaurado por muy buenas manos. Significativa sanación por un muy buen profesional. Muy elegante encuadernación del siglo XX, en piel decorada con hierros en seco. ==Muy raro ejemplar, pues no hemos encontrado uno igual en grabados en ninguna biblioteca. El que posee la Biblioteca de Catalunya, aun mismo año, misma ciudad y mismo impresor, los grabados que lo adornan son distintos que el nuestro. ===Cristóbal Plantino se hizo célebre por obtener de Felipe II los derechos de impresión en exclusiva de los textos religiosos, hecho que hizo florecer su imprenta. Está considerado como uno de los impresores más importantes del siglo XVI, sus obras se distinguen por el cuidado, buen gusto y excelentes materiales. El español Arias Montano fue uno de los protectores más influyentes de los intereses del impresor. En 1571 Felipe II se decidió a encargar al taller de Amberes la impresión de una gran cantidad de libros litúrgicos. Arias Montano recomendó a Plantino como el impresor mejor equipado para esta tarea, gran número de ejemplares en breve tiempo. El Monasterio de El Escorial adquirió el monopolio de la distribución.
