Hardcover, light grey cloth with brown lettering, silk book-mark. Pages uniformly tanned. This copy from the library of Humphrey Winterton, the foremost British collector of Africana, with his oval initialled book-plate. Laid in loosely, a cutting from the Westdeutscher Zeitung dated 1959 on the death of the Mahdi. Von Tiedemann (1865-1915) was German Military Attache on the British expedition led by Kirchener to defeat the Mahdi army in the Sudan and avenge General Gordon's murder. Another famous member of this expedition was the young Winston Churchill.
